Took the GS LC to Bahnstormers this morning for its 2nd year service and a NEW ENGINE !
still it will save me the cost of the Oil and Filter lol. Missing the bike already as the weather here in southern England is glorious! Hopefully the bike can be collected next Saturday, however spotted more white spots on swing arm and final drive so it looks like those need to be replaced as well. The service adviser said that they might get clearance to replace them whilst its in, But might not be ready for Saturday boo hoo.
Also I think I will be getting another silver engine not a black one so hopefully I can stop this one corroding.
So here is to day1 of no bike week.

Had a quick look at a 13 plate GS WC parked at a dealers the other day, looked really clean until I got a bit closer ie within about 10 feet or so, there was corrosion on the swinging arm and the final drive unit with paint lifting but the engine itself was absolutely hanging.

There were areas around rear frame/side stand fixing points where the coating/paint had lifted leaving heavily corroded alloy, coating was lifting at just about all the seams on the motor where casings met and where any fixing bolts were present.

For what was a 3 year old bike which looking at the other parts such as wheels and paintwork etc appeared to have been reasonably well cared for it was disgrace and I've seen cheap import bikes with better finishes on their motors.

I believe that the replacement silver engines have a more durable finish applied because judging by this one i would say that even if it had been ACF treated it would have succumbed

Is the corrosion only related to silver engines and final drives !

What year did the black engines come in ??? And will they be black in the Adventure model ?

All the Adventure WC models from release in early 2014 have the black finished engines and final drive, speaking to the dealer they claim that they have never seen any corrosion problems on the black finished WC motors only on the silver finished bikes

That sets my mind at ease as it will be an Adventure I'll be getting when the time comes to change.

Probably only able to afford a 15 model year.

I've seen corrosion to the black engine of a WC GSA

A mate's 15my bike was replaced by BMW for a new machine and the other one (14my) is sat in my garage :(

Just dropped my 14 GSA with black engine off at dealers for an engine change due to corrosion - not sure I'm happy as its done 15 K and just getting run in.

Should I be happy, sad, disappointed or grumpy ?

I don't think it matters what colour of engine it is? I have a 65 plate GSA with a black engine and I am just waiting for the parts to come in. Plus some of my wheel spokes are rusty too so the wheels might be getting done to!,,,

Bike has been washed every week, FS365 and garaged and its in clip! Sold my 09 plate GSA and it was in better nick, no marks on any parts accept centre stand! Wish I had stuck with her, changing has turned out to be a costly mistake I think!!!

Good luck to you allxxxx
Ps what do we do when the things are 2 yrs old? Just wait on it rusting away?????? Do you think BMW have shares in Scott oil and ACF 50! Lol

Why's it costly? BMW are replacing the parts under warranty.

I'm interested to know the circumstances of those black engined bikes with corrosion, as mine was as good as the day I bought it, after nearly 2 years.

Yes me too this is my 3rd GSA and I've not had any probs with either of them due to corrosion each covered daily winter riding and over 12K the 2016 I have now I'm keeping longer so we shall see, but that has 12K so far and also done a winter.
The only bit of slight corrosion is the spoke fixings but a quick polish soon sorts that out.
It seems strange that some are affected, even with the best of care yet others look awful.
I've seen some at dealers that look really bad in relation to being cared for, and others of the same vintage looking mint, even some of the demo bikes look terrible.
So I guess it's luck of the draw, Fingers crossed mine is ok so far.

Wollastons have replaced a number of black engines.

My local dealer said it hasn't had problems with any black motors, must be something to do with the more inclement weather they have in the south of england and excessive use of salt on the roads

Took my bike out today and reading this thread thought I'd check my engine. It's a 15plate gs with 6k on the clock and the engine is covered in white spots. Mostly where the heads mate to the engine 😣. When is it best to raise this the dealer now or next service?

As long as the next service is before the 2 years from first registration is up.
