After having a new final drive fitted, does it need to be "run in" and if so, how ?
The oil has to be changed at 600 miles, but got various different answers to the question when I asked.

I can sort of get my head round perhaps the gears need to "bed together" but still a little confused by it.

Any ideas :nenau

I wouldn't have thought it really necessary although oil is cheap and a change would give you peace of mind.
Mikeyboy might pop in soon with the definitive answer.

I've never understood why there are so many problems with final drives. Car final drives last hundreds of thousand miles without having their oil changed and give no trouble so why the huge difference with bikes?

BMW didn't used to have problems with theirs either, but accountants deciding which components will be used, and not the engineers results in a watered down product.

because bmw's bike final drive wasn't engineered to a high enough standard?

You need to change the oil after 600 miles but you don't need to run it in.

It's about £4 of oil - 180ml per change (and easy to do).
I change mine every 6000 miles and my final drive sends me a letter saying "thanks Dad" as a result I'll keep doing it

It's not a question of costs or servicing requirements, I'm just a little confused about the actual "running in" and if required ....
IF it is, what are you supposed to be doing ???

If you've bought it, ride gently and change the FD oil

If it's on PCP - who cares

The FD doesn't need running in unless you'll own it in 5 years my friend

If it's "bedding in" does that require a certain amount of "running in" ??

No, it's not like your going to keep it under 6000rpm, when your riding it's turning.

Keep your speed below 160mph and it will be fine, but what every you do dont go over 190mph or your final drive will be the least of your worries

I don't feel confident taking my XR over 130. It just doesn't feel planted in the same way my 1300s did at 170

Had my 600 mile service done yesterday {new engine, swing arm and bevel drive} the oil was changed in engine and bevel.
and yes I did "run in" engine so bevel was as well.

I had that situation, BUT......
The new engine is run in, and then another new final drive was put on. So, I'm still not sure if (though may be a little late now :) ) if a final drive on it's own needs to be run in as such or not.
It would appear that no one else seems to know either !
