New French law

So where does one buy a disposable breathalyser then??:nenau

Most "Bar Tabac" petrol stations , brico's, chemists sell them . 3-5 euros for a pack

Vests or armbands not required untill Jan 2013 unless scrapped before then.

"Came back through the eurotunnel last week and saw the AA desk on the UK side had a warning notice on it saying that bikers in France have to wear a reflective vest and be prepared to be stopped and possibly fined if you dont. Load of crooks trying to sell their bloody vests..."

Do you mean if one wears glasses, one must have a spare pair??? Will contact lenses do???:nenau

Cheers:thumb

Not sure re contacts, a French driving licence shows if glasses are worn for driving, if it does you must have a spare pair its the same in Spain

Glad I bought a GSA with metal luggage all round last year then. Sounds like I'm going to need all that pannier space for all the gear I'll need to take with me to France. What will they insist on next? Condoms? a tent? clean underwear (not usually an issue :D)..!

As I have UK "vocational" driving licence ie: I drive for a living & have to undergo a driver medical. Because of this my licence shows the code 01 in section 12 on the rear of my photo card, which means I wear glasses, and if I'm stopped at the roadside by the authorities they can tell that I should be wearing my glasses. So no doubt the French cops will understand the licence codes too

Your EU Licence particularly if Photocard

Issued shows on the back in the Codes box 01 alongside the category of vehicle
whether you have to wear glasses whilst driving that type of vehicle.ie 01= eyesight correction

So it is easily spotted roadside and checked by any clued in Gendarme.

Have always taken a spare pair abroad as I can be a clumsy git

Don,t know if contacts count

I have always needed eye correction for driving and that has always been stated on my driving licences (UK, ROI, Canada, Germany) depending on where I was living at the time.

I always wear contacts and have done so for 35+ years. If the police wanted to check, they could just ask you to read a number plate at the required distance. Don't know if they carry the special instrument they use in Germany to check eye sight before you are allowed to sit the test - doubtful. Contact lenses and/or glasses would be acceptable. The spare pair of glasses (or lenses) is sensible. I would never go anywhere on holiday without a spare pair (even if I didn't intend to drive there).

...and if (like most mere mortals) bods' have a 'normal' licence, how the feck is plod meant to know if the driver is meant to wear glasses?

I took up wearing glasses when my arms were no longer long enough to read a newspaper.... If I put them on to drive, I'd go straight into the Thames. I can imagine the scene in rural France:

Plod: Do you wear les lunettes? Ow you say, the glaziers?

Moi: Oui, to read a livre.

Plod: Allors and where iz your spare pair, monsieur?

Moi: Dans my toilette, pour fait le reading a mon repos.

Plod: C'est terrible. Un grand fine pour vous, monsieur.

Moi: C'est un fair cop, not.

So if you don't wear glasses do you not have to have spare ones then. :augie

Wappers, you ARE Miles Kingston and I claim my £5 :thumb

On another note: why would someone who wears glasses or contacts not take a spare pair with them when going overseas ?

The Hi-viz armband is hardly going to take up any space and the breathalyzers will be a great morning after a heavy session way to check if you are legal to drive in this country after your hols are long over. There's bound to be a 'use by' date on them that is just under a year

Its only because I have to under go a medical every 5 years to renew my C+E driving licence entitlement that the "01" code is added, and only recently has it been added due to an over zellous doctor ticking an extra box. So its unlikely that mere mortals will have the "01" code, unless they gave the information to DVLA when applying for their licence (new or replacement), or adding a new catagory. BUT it might be interesting to find out if any mere mortals do have the "01" code and are not aware of it.

Perhaps I am a bit thick (no perhaps about it really), but why do you have to carry a breathalyser, what is the point of it?

Thanks.

This is very interesting.

I just checked my photo style drivers licence and I have the 01 coding in box 12.

I have never declared that I wear glasses to anyone, but I guess that the photo showing me with glasses on did the trick :D

Wapping dear boy

If you have a photocard licence look on the back box 12, if it has 01 code there,
you are required to wear eyesight correction for the class of vehicle it is alongside
Simples:)

Are you telling us that to drive certain vehicles you have to wear glasses, irrespective of whether you need to wear them or not?

I see a huge gap in the market if so.....

I suspect that what you are trying to say is that in order to drive certain vehicles, the driver has to undertake an eye test and (if found to need glasses) has to wear them when driving the vehicle, evidenced by an 01 in their licence. Lesser mortals, who do not need to wear glasses to drive (as there is feck all wrong with their eyesight) or who never have call to drive whatever vehicles this applies to, need not bother.

Wappers

I believe its an offence for anyone to drive in this fair land with Uncorrected Defective Eyesight and it,s probably now europewide

For example being able to read a new style no plate at 20metres without eyesight correction in good light being the required standard.

When you apply for a first licence eyesight critera apply,s and declarations made on the application

Its also a drivers responsibility to inform the DVLA of any worsening medical conditions including deteriorating eyesight.(the good old catch all )

Standards of health for those of us with Vocational licences are more rigorously checked with a first medical exam at 45yrs of age and every 5 yrs after until 65yrs then yearly thereafter We are under closer scrutiny.

I have the anomaly that I am not required to wear glasses for bike or car but have to in the truck
