New French law

@ Alan I

You are like so many and believe what the AA say

It was pointed out to them a month or so ago that they were blatantly misinforming people /motorcyclists on there web site and at the ports
but they made a few bucks from it before they were informed !!!

come on its not as bad as your lead to believe

Care to enlighten us how so? Just for information purposes purposes, I linked to the AA site earlier because most members here read English as opposed to French/German. Personally I tend to believe what the locals and their newspapers tell me i.e. the French themselves. Talking of which, can't hang about I'm off there now. :ChrisKelly

Out of interest, I notice that the Gendarmes' interpretation of the 'reflective material' has translated to a number of hi-viz fluorescent bands on the body and arms of their uniform bike jackets. I am fairly sure that they don't make a distinction between hi-viz (fluorescent) and 'reflective'.

... Hardly anyone here has a reflective sticker on their helmet, but when you do see them, they tend to be a lozenge-shaped strip about 25mm by 100mm (1" x 4") worn across the back of the helmet.

Out of interest, the ten or more motorcycle riding French policemen I chatted to yesterday afternoon, were about as reflective as a black cat in a dark well.

Via broken French and the meduim of mime, I asked them what they thought the rules were going to be. The answer..... A typical Gallic shrug of the shoulders and the usual 'pffff' noise.

I got the impression that they thought there were more pressing issues to trouble France, like lunch.

Ah lunch today was salad with jambon cru, tomato and brebe cheese. Followed by a duck breast in a fruit sauce and finished off with creme brule and coffee. All washed down with a nice chilled rose. 13.50 euros sat out under shade 29 degrees. Sorry just reflecting:D

either in one piece or made of multiple pieces, must be of a total surface area of at least 150 cm2.

I have measure my Rallye Pro 2 suit and it has 4 reflective patches which I reckon are about 28cm2 each so it doesn't need much of a change to jacket designs to comply.

Are you sure that 'pffff' noise wasn't your puncture?

errr no, there is no agreement between the UK and other EU countries.

what "might" happen is the french pass it onto the home office and your local plod will deliver it.

you can bin it as they cant do anything.

However if you go back to france they might pull you at point of entry.

I think you should look at this EU directive of 25/10//2011, which is an Inter Country directive for the sharing of road safety information, and specifically exchange of information on offences and fines.

It is just more 'form filling in' so unlikely that the majority of plod will bother filling in the docs if it is just a case of a 'minor' speeding issue.

How many people have tripped speed cameras in foreign countries and been chased for it?

I know there have been some mentioned on this site but in the grand scheme of things it must be a tiny percentage that do get chased up for it.

Perhaps things will change but, as with all these things, the paper trail seems to be the stumbling block, thankfully!!
