Can anybody suggest a new gadget for me that fulfills my criteria, I can't seem to get any real recommendations from the people in the phone / computer / electronic shops :nenau

I need a gadget that runs or syncs with Outlook on a PC. I want easy access to my diary and addresses. I also want a phone but I have a relatively up to date one provided by work (Nokia 6230i). I currently have a pay-as-you-go old thing which is increasingly unreliable, however I rarely use it for outgoing calls and only spend £50 every 3-4 months on it. My old PDA ran a cut down version of Office which I hardly used so it's not essential, especially if there is the ability to have 'Notes' on the gadget rather than Excel or Word.

I'm not interested in a camera (I have a Canon Ixus which suites me fine) or an MP3 player (I have a 60 GB Ipod) and I don't need GPS (I love my Quest). I just don't know much about phones.

Should I get a phone, or a smart phone or a PDA that can be a phone :nenau

I'd recommend a couple of months in Sudan or Zimbabwe to get yer perspective in order....and have a bit of a rethink perhaps. :)

Thanks for your suggestion, you are obviously very knowledgeable on the subject

Respectfully, I agree with this phrase. Not particularily against the thread starter but for most people in Europe.

Well said.

Are we having a bad day :mmmm

But you already have one!

You can sync all your contacts and calendar to & from Outlook to your 6230i using the Nokia PC Suite and either bluetooth, infrared or USB. Works very well indeed.

The PC Suite can be downloaded from here: http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,73457,00.html

You should have received a suitable cable with your phone if you dont have infrared or are so frustrated by bluetooth that you want to smash your pc by dropping it from the top of the infamous Gerkin.

It's pretty easy, the PC suite sits lurking on your PC until you connect the phone, then it all syncs like magic.

So, you now have a different question to answer: I've just saved £250 so what is the best accessory for my GS?

:D

Andy

edit: just noticed you may want to take notes. This is a bit of a pain with a phone keyboard obviously, but you probably have a little notes app on the 6230 which will also sync with Outlook. Alternatively, use little pieces of paper.

Howie, I have a 3G Nokia 6680 that does all of that. It syncs with Outlook, so I have all of my contacts, email ids, appointments, , it has a To Do list, Notepad, Reaplayer, A C: drive and an additonal slot for a memory card and numerous additional functionality.

What an odd post?

The man asks for advice about buying a phone and you suggest he witness's poverty in Africa, presumably to make him realise he doesn't need a phone.

Or have I got the gist of this wrong.

:nenau

I have a Sony Ericcson P800 which does all that (inc the mp3 and camera) and it's a phone too!

But it's a bit old and bulky now. I'm looking for a cheap upgrade to the SE P990i.

centaur, I think that maybe you should take a chill pill!

I can't imagine that there are very many members of this BB who are not aware at some level of the tribulations of other parts of the world.

But this is a forum for riders of BMW motorcycles. Definitively, BMW owners and riders are likely to enjoy a better lifestyle than Sudanese people or, it has to be said, many, many others in the world.

The BMW lifestyle probably includes other 'toys' like computers; mobile telephones, microwave ovens etc. Most of us have a selection of these things.

Some of us also take steps to improve the lot of those less well off than we. Check this thread for example.

But why wade in on an innocent question with your moral stepladder? Have you ahd a bad day?

I dont understand why I'm associated with centaur :nenau I absolutely agree with Greg Masters. I was biting my lip where Greg ddn't, simple as that.

thats cleared that up, now perhaps we can get back to Mutleys PDA

Answers :-

I'm not having a bad day.

I know this place is a bikers site and gadgets figure, even if not bike related; it's why I try and offer help in the computer forum when i can :)

Acknowledge this site is also involved in raising funds and awareness for charitable causes.

Sometimes feel that the 'gadgetry' is becoming far too intrusive (age I guess ? )....so the dig about a 'reality check' was offered......tongue-in-cheek....so carry on lip-biting.

Feet-on-ground

All,

Centaur's right - we need to consider those less fortunate etc.

Clearly that is why he saved his £12 sponsorship to the site and is only a Registered User rather than a Sponsor........

Mutley - I use an MDAIII (AKA O2 XDA 2s) - newer/smaller/faster PDA phones are available - but I got it off eBay cheap and it does everything you want (plus loads more - (poor) camera, Office, TomTom satnav).

As Tobers said, your Nokia will sync Outlook, so what GS accessory will you buy with the money saved?

A

Thanks to all (well most)

Thank you to all that tried to help with my gadget issues. I believe I have found the solution:

On the gadget front I have signed a contract for a Nokia E61  The deal was cheaper than buying a new PDA and getting an up to date pay as you go plus paying for calls for the next 12 months. In addition it will do loads of cool stuff if I really want too like wi fi web browsing and emails :thumb

As for Centaur's concern over my moral and ethical wellbeing, I have also decided to sell all the rest of my belongings and dedicate my life to the service of others .................... NOT :dabone (can I suggest that you ensure that you are preaching from a confirmed position of the moral high ground before you snipe at others).

Not really to do with morality, so much as reality.....and like I said, it was tongue in cheek.....so keep yer lid on fella ! :)
