New Garmin XT2 on the horizon

With the XT when you select "fastest" it means fastest roads, not the fastest route. If you send a route from BaseCamp which is an A to B to C and you go off the route, then the POS keeps on trying to take you back to where you went off route, even if the way you're going is faster.

I had an XT for a couple of years and after its struggles to deal with going off A to B to C routes last summer, I bought a 396 which whilst not perfect, it at least manages to do sensible routing 99% of the time.
Don’t you find the display on the 396 a bit dull and washed out

Compared to the XT, you can see the lesser pixel count and it is less bright. Also, the screen is smaller. Compared to the 590 / 595 the 396 is almost at XT levels of brightness. I ran the 396 next to my 590 and was stunned on just how dull the 590 was, even at 100% in daylight. At night the 590 is bright enough, it's a pity most of my usage of the GPS is during the day.

I’ve used a 590 for many years on the big bike and kept my even older Montana on the T7 as it has OS maps.
Having just decided to upgrade to an XT. What do I go for ? XT or XT2 ?

I know I'll have to give up the OS maps - that's why I've continued to use the Montana for so long but the route plotting and screen size probably means it's time to move on.
Maybe it's a history of car rallying or my age but there is something nice about OS maps.
I've seen so many Garmin XT's around that I was just about to order one when I read the XT2 had been launched so I am deciding if it's worth the extra and having the latest model for once.

As far as I can see the differences are;

XT2 has a bigger brighter screen
Uses the Tread app for group riding
Better in device route planning including a Michelin scenic roads option
About £200!

If I was buying now I’d go with the XT2, I think.

Also look at the Montana 7xx - much better capability for tracks and will also run the OS maps, generally much more customisable and configurable.

Not quite as good (ease of use) for the road but still has a good screen and runs the CN road maps

Where does it say it has a brighter screen? It has the same resolution as the XT, or do you mean brighter screen than the Nav VI?

Thanks Mr Berlin.
Sounds like the XT2 will be the choice - with my old Montana in the luggage or maybe a paper map as a comfort blanket.

Also depends if the XT2 is worth £200 more to you than the price of the XT, do you want the extras it offers.

No, XT2 has 1050 nits vs. 1000 nits for XT. I find the XT screen very good anyway, so I’m not sure how much difference it make in real life

Great, but as I said, the xt 2 is quite a bit more expensive, only worth it if you need the extra apps etc. If I was buying for the first time, then possible the xt2, but wouldn't sell my xt for it

@MartinK I've had the same with my XT this morning, with the added problem of the display gone wrong. Anyone know how to resurrect the boot loader screen in the second photo?
I might be able to save my XT, the brightness is currently stuck at 40% and won't go any brighter.
Looks like I'll have to get the XT2 if I can't resurrect the XT. My ONLY reason, is the knowledge of how IT companies like to leave old tech behind once new versions come out. After all, I might be able to get the XT repaired and sell it on to recoup the cost.

Me neither. I’m quite happy with my XT. But the OP is replacing an ageing 590, and if I was buying now, I‘d buy the latest version. Up to him, I’d say

Som on another thread I posted a full reset option - you might try that

I just read on Garmin's website that their products carry a 2 year warranty, so as I bought it in July 2021, back to Sportsbikeshop it goies.

I've always found their support quite good - they replaced 2 Montana's and mounts without quibble.
