New GS owner ... odd fuel gauge !

Evening all
A quick question i have a 2006 gs1200 and the fuel gauge seems a touch random...
once full theres room for another bar on the gauge - is this normal
then it stays full until about 120 miles then drops to half full then when dowm to 40 miles you can ride for 10-15 stop turn off restat and be told you have another 40 miles to do
my bike has a 12 month bmw warranty and didnt want to call them if its a gs thing !!!

Sounds like the fuel strip!

They need it for a day to change it and allow it to set but I had two on mine.

"Do you fill it on the centre stand and store it on the centre stand? if you dont you should especially if you leave it for a few weeks" they told me

my 2006 56 plate GS has been spot on with the fuel gauge, takes about 20 seconds to update after filling up, and goes down as you would expect, never jumps around.

On the subject of filling it with petrol, is it best to do it on centre stand? i have been sitting on the bike doing it, now with tank bag, have been doing it on the side stand, but as it leans over a fair bit, i don't think i get as much fuel in

Several (many) threads on the topic. Several punters seem to have had theirs fixed at dealers'.

The top chocolate block on mine only works as and when it feels like it. It also counts upwards instead of downwards from time to time.

Odd Gauge

The GS fuel gauge is almost worthless, but does provide a modicum of entertainment while riding.

And it certainly provides loads of entertainment on here.
Stick around a while and you'll see

1. Just fill tank
2. Ride 190 - 200 miles (or till yer arxe gets sore)
3. Fill tank again

Repeat steps 1 to 3 till you get there

I don't think I've ever managed to get that top 'bar' to illuminate on my 06 GSA....and I've tried!...it's like a challenge trying to get that little bit more in to light it up!

Although I do remember it briefly coming on once....but it was out by the time I was out of the service station

Mine's very similar, from new. 40k plus since and no change, not that I have tried to fix it. The closet I get it thumping it down of the centre stand to see if the fuel slopping around will jolt it into life.

Sometimes mine lights two or three times in a row, more often it resolutely refuses As it lives at the very top of the scale I can generally remember that I have just filled up to the brim, which maybe explains why our distant ancestors progressed to walking on two legs. I just let the scale do its own thing, happy in it's electronic world.

Mine occasionally starts climbing as it empties. I've managed to put in 32l with the gauge reading 2/3 full. Other times it whistles down to 2 bars with nearly 200 miles left in the tank.

A good point well made ....as you've just seen the tank full to the brim, the top bar is therefore obsolete.

As for the accuracy of the guage...I find it erratic, but reasonable at the bottom end of the scale when the 50 mile warning comes on (although that goes up and down too) and then when it gets to 10 ish I know I should be concerned
