Tell Debbie, you will happily buy one at RRP…… if not … the doors over there…
RRP? I assume that is regular retail price? I wish it were so easy over here. No at this dealer we have to play the game.
Debbie texted that her boss asked that I come in to discuss the price "in house" because that's how they operate. I of course replied that I don't operate that way, I'll come in only if a price is agreed upon. Then I gave them my very generous yes or no offer, too generous I'm thinking now actually.
$19,999 Special
$390 Freight
$250 Deadwood green
$500 Spoke wheels
$21,139 This is Harley's suggested selling price.
But dealers here often wanting to make more $ come up with various "fees" to tack on that may sound somewhat legitimate but really are nothing more than added dealer profit. Prep and doc (document) are but two examples. (The first price they came up with, over $23,000 with cast wheels, was "out the door" but wasn't broken down so I don't know what fees they came up with?)
Anyway I texted Debbie the above breakdown plus $300 more which they could add in the form of whatever fee they chose. So $21,439.
For reference over here vehicles are registered and taxed by the State you reside and it varies. Me being in West Virginia it would be 6% of $21,439 plus $10 to record the title, and $32 for 2-year registration and license plate. While dealers are required to collect these fees and taxes they then submit them to WV. So while it will be added in at the end I always leave it out of the negotiation.
Well Debbie came back saying "we accept your $21,139 offer (plus of course doc, tax, title and license) so it comes to $22,988.28 out the door". Well working backwards subtracting the State tax and license costs out, the price was over $200 more than my $21,139 plus $300 extra profit offer. It turns out my offer of $300 additional profit wasn't enough to cover their $499 doc fee. I texted my offer still stands.
She will no doubt reply "sorry, by State law we can't adjust the doc fee". This is only somewhat true, while the State doesn't care what dealers charge for a "doc fee" (or if they charge nothing at all) the State requires dealers charge the same to each of their customers. Naturally my offer for the bike will have to be adjusted down from $21,139 plus $300 extra profit to $20,940 plus $499 extra profit. Geesh......
