New helmets, how much do they give over time?

Im currently sat on my sofa watching TV, alternating between wearing a brand new XL & XXL sized Shoei Neotec helmets. The XL feels a little too tight, whereas the XXL feels comfortable. When holding the XXL and nodding, my head moves within the helmet, whereas with the XL it doesn't. I know it needs to be a close fit, but how much does a new helmet give over time? £460 is a lot of money to get it wrong:eek:
 
It sounds as if the XXL is too large for you. The usual in-shop test is to have the customer put on the helmet and for the retail assistant to hold the sides while the customer turns his/her head left and right up and down and there should be no significant movement of their head within the helmet. Having said that, it's also possible that your head is the wrong shape for a Shoei or vice versa.... :D
 
Well I've got the Schuberth C3 Pro being delivered tomorrow, so Ill be able to compare them both. So far, the seatbelt type fastener on the XXL Shoei is digging into my skin under my chin pretty bad!
 
If it feels right it is right, if it feels wrong it is wrong.... From my experience they (mainly Arai) don't give a great deal.

If the smaller one doesn't actually give you a headache it will probably be fine once it's run in.

As a Shoei man, this is also my view.
And just maybe, get your hair cut??

Well it's a toss up between the Shoei Neotec & Schuberth C3 Pro. Shame the Shoei doesn't have a full chin pad between the strap and chin, like the C3 Pro does!
 
Shoei Neotec chin pad doesn't cover the whole strap, making the strap uncomfortable. Its quite annoying as the Neotec fits well otherwise, and I'm lead to believe is a better quality helmet than the C3 Pro? You can see in this photo where the black plastic part of the buckle digs into my chin...

Schuberth C3 Pro chin pad is much longer, covering the whole of the strap and making it more comfortable...

With the Shoei, if you loosen the buckle to the left of the shot you posted won't that move the plastic buckle to the right of shot and over the padding? Looks like there's clicks left to take up with the fastening mechanism. Or maybe I've misunderstood how it works...

You are right, but even when the plastic buckle is as far over as possible, and the strap fastened as tight as it will go, the chin pad still doesn't do a very good job. For a £460 helmet I think its a poor design feature...

Maybe you need to look in the Shoei accessories catalogue for the ancillary chin strap padding :rolleyes:
