New ( ish ) 80GS

I've just got myself a '92 R80GS in red. It's only done 15000 miles & looks immaculate- only trouble is it's got no keys, & it's been stood in a garage since 2001 without being started or run !
I can see it will need new tyres, battery, full fluids changing, carbs & fuel lines cleaning out etc .........but is there anything else I need to be checking ?
The keys I presume I can get from a dealer if I give them the engine & chassis number.

Before you ask ........It only cost me a grand, so it can afford to have a bit spent on it

Thanks bumpmuncher..I initially moved this thread as I thought it said R850GS ( I'm in a bad mood today, so not viewing items properly.....sold a bike to the excellant Irish contingent and the stupid, ignorant bad mannered jackasses who are the delivery people have failed to turn up to collect it......even letting me know they'd be here for about 9.30pm....and nothing, not even a 'phone call..zilch...AAAaaaargh Bastids..one more day of my life wasted .......and breathe

Hi Sidestand, Welcome aboard.

Things worth checking are the parts made of rubber, like the swing arm boots, fork boots/dust covers. Check the wheel and steering bearings as the grease can dry out and cause the bearing to collapse quite quickly once it's used again. Oil seals will need checking too.

Before you try to start the bike with the starter button, and after changing the oils/s (Don't forget the gearbox is separate, plus the final drive) turn the motor over several times by hand. I'm not sure how easy it is to do this as you'll need to expose the end of the crank.
This will help work the oil back into the main bearings etc without putting undue stress on them. Another method (Do NOT try to start the motor if doing this) for this is to fill the engine and gear box as full as you can with cheep clean oil, and leave it for a few day to work its way through everything for a few days, then dump this before turning it over by hand.
Also pull the plugs (fit new ones) and pour a light oil in the cylinder, remove the rocker covers and check the valves and oil all the moving parts.

Some of this sounds a bit extreme, but it could be the difference between having a nice motor or rebuilding it because a bearing has collapsed.

One other thing you could do:

Put the bike, your tent and the Misses in a van/trailer and come join us in Devon for the Gentleman's Airhead Weekend. I'm sure Proff will have her up and running in no time.

turn the motor over several times by hand. I'm not sure how easy it is to do this as you'll need to expose the end of the crank.

Put it on the centrestand, take the plugs out, select top gear and turn the rear wheel by hand.

looks like it has luggage ,heated grips and stainless exhaust ,so you are well away.
if he has an r80g/s or a vincent shadow hiding under those boxes i will take it

Kin Bargain, looks like a minter, hope paper work is good, err not a hot one!!! Just shows there are still some out there at a good price, happy riding, jealous Dus!

That was a bargain!!! Check air filter, this is worth doing as my bargain bike had a mouse nest in there. Check float bowls for crud. Drop the oils out and put fresh oil and filters in but put cheap oil in the engine. New battery, plugs out and turn engine over for a long time. Check for sparks .Once the battery has been recharged ,plugs back in and start. You may get a bit of leakage from various seals but they will improve with a few miles, if not then change them then. After a short warm up change filter and oil to a good quality one before any serious milage. Oil and filters are cheap compared to a broken motor.Check the tyres, chances are they have chnged into bakerlite . Check brake pads by removing them as sometimes the friction material seperates from the steel. Oh and enjoy, you have just bought one of the best bikes in the world.
