Mine had 4K miles and had sat at in a garage for 13 years.
Changed the tyres and all the oils, dumped the fuel and it started 1st time.

Still the original air filter, plugs and brake pads

One of the fork seals started to leak, but after a couple of days and 30 miles it stopped.

Only managed 300 miles on it over the last year. They're overpriced heaps of shite compared to modern bikes .

Now got to sort out some keys for it, so I'm going to try Pidcocks first, as that's where it came from originally.
The battery looks sulphated up - I'll give it a try on the Optimate, but think a trip over to Motobins is inevitable.

Anyone got any tips/recommendations for carb cleaning ?

They might not need cleaning, take the float bowl off and take out the jets and see if they're clear with no obstructions. My "left for 13 years" carbs were fine after blow thru from an airline. Still on the original diaprahms.

Ta, I'll try that - petrol taps are all switched off anyway. There's a bit of petrol in the tank, but I'll drain that off.

Pidcocks couldn't help with the keys, but they put me in touch with Alan Jefferies, who are going to check with BMW next week - they reckon they have an 80% success rate, so here's hoping.

Got some good news from Alan Jefferies this morning - they have a key code registered for the GS , so as soon as the new V5 arrives I can go & get some keys.

Took the float bowls off the carbs as you suggested Steptoe & they are spotless inside. I'll do as you said though & blow out the jets. Have ordered some new gaskets anyway.

Hopefully, I should be on tthe road in a couple of weeks .

One glitch though is the sidestand - it won't stay in the down position unless the weight of the bike is on it - is there a fix for this ? as with me being a shortharse & the stand being well forward from where it is on most bikes, I'm finding it very difficult to get off the thing.

There is a £200 fix from Migsel

Yep, sidestand was a pain for me too. Thunder and I came up with a patented option, however you still look like a prat

I bought the Migsel sidestand and its the best [rather sensible] thing I have ever bought for the bike. And I have bought a fair bit

anyway, I've got Sportouring looking for one now, as they seem to be the only UK Migsel stockist .....meanwhile, I've been practising getting off it without the stand down

Can't wait to take it out for a spin, but It's going to be 2 weeks for the keys & paperwork ......made do with taking me K1200 out for a blast tonight instead

I've had the same problem with the sidestand on my recently aquired R100GS, i am getting used to it and if the ground is flat I can just about flick the stand out when I seated on it, i need to get my toe halfway along the stand and then take a second bite at it once the stand is nearly fully extended.

Saying that it's getting easier to just get off then use the side stand, the only problem with that is when it's loaded with camping gear my old legs won't clear the kit

So i'm making another stand mounting bracket to relocate the original stand further back.

I'll let you know how I get on

I think he only made 10 which sold out very quickly.
He might make another batch if there's enough interest, try PM'ing him.

The new battery, service kit, & Heynes manual arrived today from Motobins - not bad at all for service

Looks like I got another busy weekend (just have to make time for that Lions match)

My new V5 arrived today for the GS - so it's off to Allan Jefferies first thing in the morning for the keys

Any advice on start up procedure ?
I was going to take the plugs out & put a bit of oil doen the bores .......
then wind her over a few times without the plugs. Put them back in & fire her up.
Once the oil gets warm, do the oil & filter change.

Any obvious flaws in my procedure ??

Bit dissapointed I got no response to me previous post.
No matter - went up to allan Jefferies today & got me key
Changed battery, plugs & air filter
drained old petrol - bit of oil down the bores.............

then - turned her over a few times sans plugs - put the new ones in.
Gallon of fresh petrol....a cough & splutter.............

And she started like a good 'un

already been round the block on her

MOT & tax on Monday, methinks .........then I'll change the oil after she's got warm..............

Now I'll have to get me pipe, slippers & incontinence pants on order
