New KTM 1190 Adventure/R

Hi
Just wondering how you found consumption as compared to a GS. Some people say about the same while others are saying you get less miles to the gallon.

Not done any motorway yet as haven't needed to to cover distances fast just for sake of it.
Getting around 44-45 mpg on average A & B roads riding for fun, have got up to 48 trying rain mode whilst running in - flip side is when giving it throttle gets down to low 40's or less.

So not far off the GS's mpg unless you ride it hard, trouble is you feel like riding it a lot harder than the GS pretty much all the time:D
But that's exactly why I bought it so loosing a couple of mpg in exchange for barrow load of fun seems fair.

Smitten...

Took the standard Adv for a ride on Saturday at McCallen's. Haven't been able to get it out of my mind since. Find myself dreaming about orange crash bars, broken white centre lines becoming one solid white line, the feeling that the laws of physics have ignored me in bends, and that I'm loaded and can go out and buy one. It's a case of either throwing money at therapy to cleanse my mind, or using that money to go towards this new love.

In essence, it's the grown up version of my current, ageing, capable and fantastic 800GS, so will squeeze one more summer out of it and take delivery of the 'R' version next Spring. The bigger wheels, beefed up suspension, better looks and lack of ESA make it all the more appealing.

Congratulations to KTM for seemingly trumping the market!

The latest issue of Bike has a feature on the 1190.They rode it for 3000 miles and were highly impressed with the bike, especially comfort and long distance ability.

Thanks for the heads uo Arsey. Lots of superlatives in that very detalied review. Torque curve interesting and in comparison with competitors 'Handling is in a different league of agility. 1.5 L of oil use in 3000 miles and gunge in the filler cap could be a concern.

Bought my first R1200GS 2011 oil head, a few weeks back and enjoying it, can't keep off it. Test rode the KTM 1190 on Saturday, out of curiosity, and was very impressed with most of it. I liked sport mode and it is certainly very quick, but in a usable way. But while it is very forgiving, I am not sure I would actually be quicker or enjoy my riding more than than on the GS. If I had tried the KTM first no way would I buy a GS, but now I am used to the GS, it kind of suits me and flatters my riding.

That said, the 1190 is probably the most accomplished bike I have ridden, and I intend to buy one when the dust has settled, and I am over my initial love affair with the BMW. No point in listing the KTM's virtues it has all been said. I found it as good as everyone said, and I prefer the idea of a chain to a shaft. I like the idea that I can ride it occasionally on the lanes and know I can pick it up if I drop it. The engine sound is a bit uninspiring but cant fault much else. So as long as the next six month don't start to show up lots of faults, I will be looking to buy when the first reasonably discounted used models come to market.

Don't look on the AdvRider forum then:augie:blast

I've trawled through a load of 1190 threads on advrider and have only come up with some complaints about heat from the engine in traffic, the indicator switch, weaving at high speed and screen buffeting for some. But I can't find any real issues regarding reliability, so could you point me in the right direction ?

Don't worry Davy,Nutty is just trolling as usual.I think he doesn't like the fact that there is a better more fun bike out there than the Toilet GS which he has spent a fortune on to find out it is still in development and needs glitches sorted out by recall.A bike so exciting that he'd rather be in the KTM section of this forum than out riding it-though it may be back at the dealers again for another fix.

Best handling, fastest by a mile AND yet still best for long distance-you know it's orange !!

ktm

Mines done 4500 miles not a problem adjusted the chain once thats it.
Every mile it just gets better im well pleased with the change.
The w/c gs just didn't float my boat and the engine rattled like a old ducati.

It seems that KTM have moved the game on in terms of power, handling, and squirtability.

BMW seemed to have removed the mojo that made the air cooled GS so great, namely it's low down grunt and tractability to leave a buzzy bike with no defining character and then get muppets to pay £13k plus to finish developing the new bike.

The GS will outsell the KTM but those in the know will choose the better handling faster bike and know they didn't have to follow the lemmings over the cliff !!!

Heat: I rode in 25c+ and it was a little warm but not a serious issue, should be nice in winter :clap

Indicator switch: you get used to it, not an issue

Weaving: 200 kph with top box, no weave.

screen buffeting: a little - I use a touratech extender and have ordered the taller, touring screen.

A bike that handles, is comfy, and goes like fuck, what's not to like :beerjug:

Good to read. :thumb2

I thought Ducati had already done this and KTM were just catching up :)

They did, but now KTM not only have caught up, they've blasted past and moved the game on significantly. :thumb

And as the BIKE road test summed up, the BMW has a better screen. That's it. :D

Not trolling, just saying that the bike isn't perfect, and has its problems, just like the new GS does. My bike has had no recalls, and the only item replaced under warranty has been a set of brake pads, so for me has been exactly what I expected it to be.:beerjug:

Besides being beaten with the ugly stick the KTM looks like a great bike, and one day I may add one to my collection, however, I'll be under no illusion that it will be a better long distance tourer than the GS.:rob
