New KTM 1190 Adventure/R

I had a look at the KTM yesterday at Fowlers MC. Not tested it yet though.
But its just so damn fugly, in a truly fugly way. :eek
Yeah i know the GS/GSA isn't a pretty bike, but it has rugged good looks.:augie

That KTM just looks like a Vstoms ugly cousin...:blast

The KTM SMT looks much nicer....:thumby:

Did you see the R though-that looks stunning !!

No i didn't see the R, but i've just googled it and it does look a lot nicer, more aggressive styling and a bit like the 990 adv (which i quite liked style wise).

One question though. what about the fueling on the 1190, as all previous FI KTM's i've ridden have had a horrible on/off snatchy throttle..

If they HAVE sorted that glitch, then it might well be an excellent bike...
I might even be tempted to go orange..:D

The fuelling was faultless .

I didn't buy a 990 Adv because of the shite fuelling and that's why I love my carbed 950SE.

The RC8 fuelling was good but the 1190 Adv is perfect.

I tried to fuck it up but couldn't . It'll pull from 35moh in top with no snatch at all and is totally sorted thought the range .

I would buy the R tomorrow if I had the dosh

I've picked up a 2012 990(with Akrapovic so assume its been mapped to suit) and the low speed fuelling is fine. Off to try an new R out next week.

There's not a lot on the net about the R, but Toutatech are busy already on the ordinary adventure:

I was waiting for the new GSA to launch before changing but after seeing the R at tri counties in Bracknell at the weekend I am sorely tempted.

The killer for me could be the pillion comfort reported elsewhere on this thread...me and Mrs Oldnfat tour allot and if the pegs are too high this would be a deal breaker for me.

I'd like a demo on one but keep reminding myself its a chain drive which puts me off :blast

I've now had a couple of trips between the KTM and BMW dealers to check out both bikes. I'm waiting for some better weather before I take both out for demo rides, but I honestly think that the more I look at these two machines, the KTM looks like it is a far superior product with a better quality of finish over the GS. It looks like it is worth more of the asking price than the BMW which just doesn't. I know opinion may change after riding both, but it's the KTM that peeks my interest more right now.

Ahhhh c'mon :P

Chain drives get un-warranted bad press from peepes that have had shaft drives. In reality, how much hassle is it to occasionally lube a chain and to even more occasionally adjust it? (A ten minute job if that).

Replacing chain and sprockets when they're worn is a small price to pay compared to a new shaft if it goes, and with a chain breaker and spare link on that RTW trip a hell of a lot less hassle.

Chain drive also gives you instant drive. You probably loose one or two horses in a shaft.

I wouldn't decide on one bike over another because of chains v shafts ...

My last three bikes have been shaft drives and all of them have developed potentially expensive problems. My 07GSA had THREE rear wheel bearing replacements in 18,000 miles (under warranty) .Previous GS had an oil seal fail after 10,000 miles. I haven't had a chain since 1979 so probably shouldn't comment, but I'm not impressed with the BMW shaft thing at the moment.

p.s. Ive just sat on an 1190R and it feels just right, nice and tall and GSA isn :D

From the latest editing of Bike Mag

"Leaping past long strings of traffic needs just a single flick of the wrist and cutting loose on deserted middle of nowhere roads, the 1190's so much quicker than the GS its embarassing"

" The KTM is the one that stands for the simple pleasure of riding. We'd choose it for a sunny morning blast and it's the sportiest"

Plus you always have the option of adjusting the gearing to suit your riding style :D

Some fabulous scenery in this comparison of 1190 v 1200
Great shame I'm not fluent enough in German:

I know the GS isn't the prettiest bike out there, but the new KTM is one of the ugliest bikes I've seen:barf:D::pullface

You'll only ever see the rear end of one from your LC as they disappear over the horizon, so here's a few rear ends :D:

:mad:Holy ********it I'm not sure whether to post this, I don't know where it is....undoubtedly not clever... but hey here goes 271kph indicated= 168mph
At 5.45 if you can't bear to watch the lot:

Looks like the E75 Athina 120kph speed limit
When you consider that the spec of its father, the RC8 is 271kph, a tall bike , supposedly de tuned, shouldn't go that fast.
That vid and/or the rider is going to get pulled !

Well, I have for some time been thinking I may have made a mistake in buying a new GS and not trying the 1190 first.. So yesterday had a quick go.

It was a mates test ride, he's got a well sorted 1050 Tiger and loves it but its coming time for a change, we both nearly had 990's a few years back but for various reasons we went for, the tiger in his case and a GS in mine.

So, the 1190......just how fast is it.....very, very fast. I think properly set up you would need to be on a good sports bike to get away from it. I found the controls easy and light, it makes a great sound, different to the GS but still good, almost a V8 ish burble..

Build quality.. at least as good as the GS (note the right and left switch gear still different materials though and looked odd). I think it will look ok in a few years with several thousand miles on it.

The rev counter is the main dial but the digital speedo is easy to read and you need to keep a eye on that! As when the big hand passed the number 7 the digits change rapidly!! The rest of the info display was not so easy to read on the move.

So, from my short ride they are the main bits, the not so good bits...for me, I'm 5'11" and 15 1/2 stone it's cramped, it suited my mate better as he's smaller but to me getting off the GS it felt like getting on to a 800gs or 800 tiger.

Vibes - lots and every where, under 6k rpm through the feet, not much but they are there, over 7k through the hands and too much for me.

Buffeting.... Only had the screen 2/3's up but over 65mph and it was not great over 3 figures and it was, in my view, unpleasant, compared to the GS's screen where I can sit at these speeds visitor up on the, KTM no way!

Handeling, at normal to good speed it was excellent and as with all KTM's what a joy in the corners... And out of them! It felt confident and sure footed but get the revs up and in to some speed and it got twitchy, flyghty light and although some way off unstable ... Uneasy. Not as planted as the GS.

I was on, a private road, if the owner of Leicestershire is reading this, it was one of yours!!! and took it to just over 125 on the clock, long straight good road conditions and surface, it started to weave, not a tank slapper but a weave with oscillation of the bars to the point I rolled off slowly until it stopped and then
slowed , took it back up to speed and it was ok but it still felt less stable than I would have liked.

It was set in sport mode, had it have been set in street mode it may have been softer and able to cope.

As I said it was a quick ride, only a few miles but my mate who's test it was said more or less the same, fast, very fast but only over 7k revs, handeling great at legal speeds but go further and it's not so happy. Wind buffeting was the killer and he didn't think he could sit on it for 4-5 hours. His best comment was, and he rode a demo GS on the same route a few weeks ago. He didn't have to work as hard on the GS to cover the same ground as he did on the KTM and I think that sums it up.

For some it will suit better than the GS and it is IMHO a very credible alternative to the GS more than the Triumph EXP is (rode one last year - good as a touring bike but not a fast Sunday blast bike) I need to ride a super ten as I still think that could be good, the Multi Strada is next.. Like the KTM we both like Ducati's but cost of ownership is a main factor there.

Glad I've got a GS in the garage!!
