New laptop with XP???

Check out Ubuntu. From the web site: "Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more." http://www.ubuntu.com/ .

Excellent suggestion...

...if you want to spend hours and hours finding drivers to make things work. :rolleyes:

Windows 7 is good gear. I have the release candidate 64 bit on this machine I am working on now. Several issues being;

1. It installed very easily and in a straightforward way, recognising most of the hardware - and this only needed to be done once,
2. It is completely stable - no crashing, nothing exiting
3. It is fast. For the first time ever Microsoft has lived up to the 'faster than... insert X last version here'
4. Nothing has gone wrong

This is very strange ... :D

Suppose I'd better get my early RTM copy downloaded then....

I don't care whether it is or not :D

It'll always remain light years behind Mac OS

Thought I'd get that in before Cookie :augie

if i absolutely had to get a windows pc right now, i'd be looking at windows 7. XP is somewhat dated & programs are going to be made for 7 in future, i'd have thought. it has a much vaunted "XP Compatibility Mode" built in (in some versions anyway).

having said that, i have just installed a stripped down nLite version of XP on my iMac (just to run mapsource really) :rolleyes:

I'm so fecked off with my 2.5 yr old laptop running slower than a bastard thing and then last weekend I powered up my 10 yrd old bog standard, basic as you like iMAC, for the first time in 3 yrs. It booted up immediately and within seconds I was listening to my old itunes library, I remembered how much I just loved the 'feel' of it .

Unfortunately its not Wifi so can't connect to my router which is downstairs. :(

I've been using 7 as well. It's very good actually, good on laptops too. Fast, stable ( so far ) and fairly transparent. Although to be fair, M$ would have done well to make it worse than Vista.

Pluck
