New Lid.

After Slimbo bought a lid from Designerhelmets.com I had a trawl through their site and quite fancied one of these.....

I like the dual visor arrangement.

Well it arrived today. Quality seems ok, the clear visor is a bit thin but I suppose it might have to be so that with the tinted one down behind it and looking through two layers, there isn't any distortion.

I hadn't thought about using goggles with it but the loops hold goggle straps and it's possible to lower the visor with goggles on.

Yet to see what the noise levels are like but as it's quite a nice day I may just scoot out and give it a try!

How about this one?

Saw it at Pidcocks (Gazza's ) looks pretty good, the chin bar comes off to turn it into an open face, and it has the drop down visor. Apparrently its rated as a full face...

Well 140 miles of mixed roads later, it's comfy and reasonably quiet, certainly less wind noise at dual-carriageway speeds than my System 4 with the chin-bar off.

It's years since I've used an open-face-with-visor lid and I'd forgotten how nice it is not to have to keep cracking a visor open at lights etc to stop it misting up.

The visors are optically very good with no distortion at all and the best peripheral vision I've experienced for ages.

It'll be a good alternative summer lid.

Gazza told me it was about £260 online, but its about £400 if sourced in the uk.....

Well some of us are so ugly that it wouldn't make any difference!

I'm old enough to remember when full-face helmets were the preserve of racers and even then they were a new thing.

Open lids with at best a hinged visor and a helmet coloured stripe across the bottom (to make them look like a full-face at a distance) were the nearest most could afford.

My first full-face was a Shoei in 1974. It cost more than a suit of leathers (off the peg of course).

At that time there was a debate raging as to whether or not the 'new' full face lids were causing more neck injuries than occurred with lighter open helmets!

As stated before, comes the summer I swap my System 4 into open with peak and cheek pieces. I've always had an open-face helmet for summer use, they just feel so less restrictive.

Fortunately the 'Nannies' haven't (yet) legislated against open lids!

I don't give a toss how hot it gets, I just don't fancy filing my teeth down on the tarmac. After a couple of 'offs' I know which one I'd sooner be wearing and it ain't some poncy looking Wallace and gromit type piss pot

The joys of riding is our own decission.

I have never worn an open face, remember coming off at a roundabout when a Sunday Cortina driver (only 60miles on the Clock, Corntina that is) pulled out on me and then STOPPED in my path, my new new Grifffin, hit the tarmac on the chin bar, and all i saw was the chippings going pass.

So a full face saved me, BUT

I sometimes wear an open face helmet. In my yoof I probably came off about 8 times, face unmarked. I still look like Adonis................or was it adonut.

I digress, I swop between a ROOF 010, :helmet Craft RX7, and the open face. The Roof is like looking out of a slot, the Craft is considerably better, but very noisy. With the Nolan open face, when overtaking, the look over the shoulder, is quicker and better. I don't have to do owl impersinations, just to see half of what I see with a full face. The periphal vision is also far greater, therefore perhaps preventing the accident that may or may not hurt my Adonis sculptured jawline.

Mind you, I draw the line on my Harley friends, 20 year old lid. Another has just bought a Griffin, the padding from above the ears is removable. For summer use, he told me. Not that it matters as he's a bit deaf anyway. He refers to my helmet as microphone head. This guy wears bugger all protective clothing, and has a fatalistic attitude. Mind you, it's not that bad I suppose. He's done 300 miles, in about 3 months.
