Hi,I’m a new subscriber from Somerset and am enjoying this website and all it has to offer.
On my 06 GS the factory alarm (DWA 6) is fully working on movement etc but the led on the dash does not work. I’d like to have something visible to show the bike does have an alarm. Is it possible that the programming is wrong in some way or has the led simply just failed ?
This is only a small issue but something I’d like to sort out.
Thanks in advance.

There's no way to turn off the tell tale led so one can only assume it's fubar?
It should flash when the alarm is active and also flashes different sets of flashes to let you know which part of the system activated the alarm.
Not sure if you can gain access into the cluster?

The alarm self de activates to protect the battery when it detects low battery voltage

(normally after 7-10 days of bring armed and left) go figure ;)

it may be your battery is on the way out

Thanks for the replies. The battery is quite new so will look into opening the cluster to possibly locate/ replace the led. I know that these clocks are a little too easy to remove !

The alarm sits under the pillion seat "carrier" plate. Four M6 screws will lift it off. Disconnect the alarm plug connector and seal the ends with self amalgamating tape.

That's helpful as he's asking for a means to get the led working to have a light there to show the alarm is working.

Try disconnection the main plug to the instrument cluster to check for bad connections. I had a little trouble with mine a few years ago with the dash not remembering the average fuel and speed calculations. Disconnected it and gave it a clean out and it's been fine since.

Thanks gazza12 I did check the connector for a loose wire and give it a clean but it still does’t work. Also did the same at the alarm/ siren end to be thorough. Probably look into a failed led now or rig something else up.
Thanks again.

Couple of thoughts......

Did the bike come with the alarm factory installed? Or at the dealer prior to delivery or at a later date?.....
Enter the last 7 digits of your VIN (eg ZY12345) in here:-

https://www.mdecoder.com

Look down the page under 'Other Equipment' and see if you can see 'X603A - Alarm System'.

If it was factory installed, it should be set up to the bike, if not, it is possible it wasn't coded to the bike and the LED has never worked?, I seem to remember it should be coded to the bike on installation ??, but open to be corrected on that one withn the next 3 milliseconds no doubt !!.

Other thought, maybe the internal batteries are low / failed inside the alarm unit itself, pretty simpe to check / replace if needed.... Not sure if that would turns the LED off if they are showing as failed, but worth a check I would say. If they're good, then just try removing them and disconnecting the bike battery for at least a few minutes anyway, let the whole lot power down and start it all up again from scratch.

The alarm could be added on but if someone did this without programing the main ecu and the instrument cluster the little light on the dash wouldn't work or indicator will not flush when the allarm is arming
This is very simple to solve or check just need the computer gs911 will not be very useful here

I gave you 5mS!

If, it is arming/disarming with beeps and indicators flashing that suggest all is okay with the alarm itself.

Have you tried setting alarm off ? That way led definitely flashes (x number to indicate trigger). I'd still go for knackered led.

The last time I tried (not recently TBH) my alarm did work but it never has flashed an LED on the dash panel. The noise level was nothing spectacular so have to ask if it's worth the hassle especially as it will flatten the battery quite quickly.

TBH I’m amazed at all of your responses to what could be seen as a very insignificant problem by many. However I will soon need to park the bike in an area where a visible sign showing it is alarmed would be good. I could just fit an aftermarket led that shows when the ignition is switched off but that would be permanent and I just like things to work !
RoyF and Denz0 have confirmed what someone said to me about the Ecu not “knowing” the alarm is fitted. Did check the website as suggested and my bike is listed as having an alarm fitted. Now need to have it tested somehow. I did set it off and it is loud with indicators flashing for on and off etc but no dash led saying what triggered it. Still could just be the led broken as well I guess .....

If you planning to keep the bike could be worth buing subscriptions to Moto Scan abd OBD link LX with 10pin to OBD cable
This app has ability to test every single light on the dash plus diagnostic and service light resets if you near Croydon I could check this for you and all the questions and doubts would be answered in 30 sec.
Diagnostic over the internet is very difficult any BMW dealer could tell you what the problem is but they will probably charge £80 just to plug the computer in and the diagnostic setup will cost 100 and last you the lifetime

Just had a look at the manual for the DWA 6. Not much help. Doesn't mention anything about the led not flashing, only says it flashes when programming it or adding remotes. Also after the alarm has gone off it flashes a certain number of times to tell you what alarm it was, ie motion.

Just had a quick look at mine, I never use the alarm tbh so have forgotten how to use it properly/ remember what flashes mean.

Anyhow, pressed button one bike beeped and indicators flash. Red light flashing every 3 seconds on the bottom of the dash in the little translucent window.

I think that little translucent window turns the instrument backlighting on and off so be careful in there! This is on an 09 fyi.

Sounds like good advice although l might take you up on your offer. May well be up your way in the not too distant future.

If nothing else works get one of those dummy CCTV cameras and rob the ever flashing LED and wiring out of it to fit into your dash somewhere visable. :D
