Tempted to get the new Meta 357t V2 alarm fitted as my Spyball has finally died - it's about five years old now and my 1150Gser took a thump (knocked over) whilst on the centre stand - the final death methinks.

Have an offer of £250.00 + VAT (new). The dealer/fitter in Romford said that Meta parts are coated in resin which sounds sensible.

Any horror stories on Meta ?

Orrr, sensible advice much appreciated.

Paranoid at the moment - too many serious thefts, time to leave SE London !

Buy a f***ing big chain and a ground anchor. Alarms are plain useless.

16 or 19mm will make it crop proof. Apparently ;)

You will find lots of srories on here of many being stranded by alarms doing weird things on certain petrol forecourts or areas where there are large transmitters.

I have a meta and have had the same problem (and i dont think its just metas) when i get time mine will be removed as its left me totally stranded after filling up at a petrol station at asda kendal.

I had to push the bike 300yards or so away from the forecourt before she would start and then the hazards remained on all the way home :spitfire

I just cant afford for that to happen again. Think twice b4 fitting an alarm.

At the end of the day its a personal thing and some choose to have them and some dont.

Get in touch with Dave Spraggon at SDA 07970099891, he's based in Romford but is mobile. Top bloke he can fit whatever you want.

I must agree with Steptoe though, go for a Datatool. I used to work for them and it's the only one I would recommend after looking at the others.

It's the same Dave ! He's helped me out before wit my old spyball. Certainly new his Spyball - he was the guy who Bexley Heath BMW used if memory serves me well.

Will talk to him tomorrow re Datatool. I have a big F/Off chain and expensive disk lock. My insurance premium is too expensive for theft now.

Searching e bay for a Barret sniper rifle :thumb2

An alarm only works if YOU can hear it.. otherwise they're a complete waste of time and money. best immobiliser is taking the main fuse out - and a big chain.

I prefer the Datatool, but to answer your question:

1) Make sure that the LED module is mounted somewhere that you can see it while switching on the ignition (in case you have to use the manual overide. The dealer that sold me one bike - fitted the LED under the tail, so using the manual override needs a mirror!)

2) Write down the manual overide code and keep it somewhere on the bike - on the Meta you cannot change it to a memorable number, a la Datatool.

I have a Meta on my bike, i had it fitted, cost me around £300 3 years ago, no problems at all. I also had one fitted to my car, with no problems, and my previous bike also had one fitted and never had any problems.
If i was getting an alarm i would get another Meta without hesitation.

I had a Meta on my GSA - never let me down but I do agree that a FOAD chain (Almax) is a far better form of protection, and the alarm was always a secondary device for me.

I used to fit Meta and in My opinion they were better than the Datatool, nore complicated but in my personal opinion (so don't be stickin me wi knives) more durable.

S'funny really it's sort of a what type of oil question innit

But what do you really want a certificate or a beeping squeeling thing

Get a £29 special off e bay and wire it up except Don't connect the immobiliser sections!

So you point the key and it beeps and flashes the indicators you bump the bike and it goes off move the bike and it goes off

ANd if you really want an immobiliser get another BMW switch SO it loooks cochure and wire the starter button thru it! with the switch on the starter works "switch in the off position starter doesn't work

Like I say it's easy Also carry a feck off chain and Bar and buy a nice new Spyball sticker to place beside the flashing LED thing

Unless you tell someone they aren't going to know!

Meta 357T on my SV1000 for 3 years and no problems, Meta 357T V2 on my GS for 2 years and no problems.

As to the value of an alarm/immobiliser, that's a personal opinion/choice......you do get a small discount on your premium from most insurance companies.

Got a Meta on my F650 GS - no real hassles from it apart from when one connector pin burnt out, left me stranded and I had to call the AA.

Ahh, that sounds better, had the Meta fitted yesterday by Dave in Romford. Ask him to fit a data tool and he will do it, ask him which his favourite is and he will reply Meta. He used to work for Spyball and been around for years and does this type of work on a daily basis. Liked the three year official warranty with Meta and i told him that I needed the bike for an immediate call out ( Live news) so reliability is a first

He also fits trackers, but we agreed that the cops are under siege (and paper) so don't expect them to bother too much about a stolen bike. When I was burgled , the cops turned up but then got a call to hot foot it to a gun incident.

Incidentally, feckin Tom Tom Rider2 gave me a bit of a run around Dagenham yesterday. Likewise, the Rider 2 tried to turn me into the two lanes of oncoming traffic outside the new Olympic site in Stratford.

On the lock side of things, my local shop was burgled the shutters were held down by six locks. Amazing what plumber's pipe freezing kits can do to a lock. Going to a serious locksmith in Greenwich, (Trafalger Locks) - getting expensive now.

£250 for the Meta
£50 for the front disk lock.
Probably another £75 + for a lock with a rolling lock pin. I have a meaty chain but not sure how this would stand up to a freezing kit.

Oh yes , need another lock for my new Cannondale SL racing bike should the insurance cough up . It was stolen outside Decathlon sports centre in Rotherhithe ( "Surrey Keys" to the luvvies). This bike was only ever left locked outside once for 15 minutes with the store security guard standing some 30 feef away. Gone ! The guard was half asleep but called his mate over after I blew a fuse and felt my hands moving towards his neck when he told me that it was not his responsibility and the security camera was not working.

All of the above is true and it's not going to get any better. Crime pays, so watch your backs folks. Worked with the cops on a documentary, one of them told me that somebody had converted a Renault van (rear axle somehow moved) which reversed over a bike with doors open and hoisted the bike up. I think they said the roof was lead lined. If a tracker was found it would be parcelled up and put in the the post to some obscure destination.

Found out that you can concoct a form of Napalm by slowly boiling petrol and washing powder together. I can't get automatic weapons on E bay. Anybody want to try the boiling method first and see if it works?

Then, we can move on to rigging up some device where it erupts and makes an holy mess of light fingers.
