New Motorcycle specific GPS - FROM GARMIN!

Electronic maps can mean a variety of things, not nessecarily raster maps.

No mention of alternate grids and datums or tracklog and trackback so probably not a lot of use offroad.

Not specifically, but they say
In addition, zūmo even accepts electronic maps — making it the ultimate off-road navigator.

The quest has trackback.....of sorts, and I can't see what else they mean from the above but to accept raster maps or similar......many PDA based systems have supported it for years and it's not a hardware issue.....the processors the're putting in these things are more than capable of supporting it and the memory's there too.

What else could it mean?? :nenau

Fair comment Fanum, but its highly unlikely Garmin would build a stripped down version, I was always told electronics cost next to nowt.

Don't underestimate the power of this place and the feedback we give.......this thread and all the others in the GPS section are being read by people from Garmin and at least one other GPS manufacturer......if people say they want/need something, it will at least be heard......the marketing decisions may not support what we want but if 'they' see a need and a market, who knows ;)

Oh how true, so very true :D

Whether it was Sumo or now; Zumo, it has some marketing gimmicks and features for the US market including customise case skins (just like a mobile phone). Garmin does say "Motorcycle mount with RAM mounting hardware" but I am unsure of these words. I reckon for 'mount' read 'cradle' (just like their Quest bike kit) and the user will only get one option of mount (eg a handlebar U-bolt) and assumes all bikes are the same :nono . Unless I hear different .. IMV.. users will need other RAM parts to adapt onto a diverse bike range. Maybe when their inhouse bike tester gets it and does not fit his sports handlebars, I will get a call :D

When zūmo calculates that the motorcycle is low on fuel, it automatically reminds the rider and suggests a route to a nearby gas station.

What a pity... I really don't need gas fillups as I'm trying to cut down on my curry intake... petrol on the other hand would have been far more useful... :eek

Oh, and I wonder if those rubber buttons are going to come off the unit, just like the rubber surrounding my previous eTrexes... :rob

Other than that, it looks quite good; I think the user interface is going to be the real winning feature. :clap

Also, note that this is the Sumo :P 550 meaning that there will be other models out - If I were Garmin, I'd probably launch a pretty feature packed version first to dangle in front of all early adopters... :thumb There will most likely also be an European version coming out...

Garmins vector maps (MapSource Topo for instance) are also electronic maps

Can we hold back a little on the guess work until we actually have a unit to play with ?

If we can't guess, speculate or rumormonger... what's the use ??

Pricing!

In America the launch price is $1076 that’s £518 in the UK, and as we all know, we won’t get it for that :(

If Garmin want to sell this, it will have to compete with the Tomtom Rider. A quick look on Kelkoo shows prices as low as £314 for the rider at IT247.com. For most people, it all come down to price.

Looks good, but...

3 hour battery life typical use??? That's like saying I get 10 hours talk time out of my cell phone, typical use... I am affraid the Zumo may be sub one hour battery life (they did hint that typical use was trip planning in your living room...). This does not cut it! We need 10+ hours or REAL use. :nono

Garmin Mapquest maps are digital too... I hope they are referring to raster maps, but not counting my bessings yet. :mmmm

Trackpoints. 10,000 is good, but why are we limited at all? If I put a 2GB SD card in there I want a 100,000 tracklog, enough for my round the world trip...

MP3 support is good. There are enough Autocom users here that this will actually be used, and now I can leave my iPod at home and skip songs right from the main display. :thumb

It's like two steps forward, one step back from Garmin. I have a Garmin and love it, and am close to getting a Quest for my new GSA. The Zumo has a few good bike specific features (the fuel gauge is a useless gimmik, but may be usefull if long intervalls can be set to remind us of basic bike service), but other areas are worse than older models... I want it all (eventually), but for starters I'll be happy with the basics... :) I hope Garmin releases a 'Delux' version with everything we need (and half the price) :clap

The shizzle would be ...

... if Garmin could add to the Zumo the ability to take audio input from a radar detector(3.5mm audio jack) and to then send that audio out via the bluetooth.

Then the only thing I might ever ask for would be some sort or intercom/biketobike com.

But for now I'd be amazingly ecstatic to have one device feeding my helmet with audio/gps/radar.

Just get the Zumo together with the Intaride Liberty BT intercom. Cures all your problems with 2 devices....

I was on the garmin site last night and saw the Zumo. :thumb

I guess it was only a matter of time for garmin to come out with it. It does look cool though. But as has already been said, it would be nice if it just was a GPS.

I really don't need my GPS to tell me if North Korea has launched a missile. :)Unless it been launched at me.

I guess I forgot to mention the "money *is* a concern" part of the equation. I don't have enough money to buy a brand new zumo + an intraride system.

Come to think of it, I don't have enough money to buy either of them. I'm more in the category of people who will buy the zumo 2.5 years from now when I can buy a refurb model and when there is a newer better "zumo 1000" on the market making the old zumo obsolete.

Just curious, who’s testing it Ram-man, can you say?

Just curious :thumb

Is Pan European using the zumo at all?

He seems to always get the new garmin gadgets before they all get properly released?

any info would be good.
