New old new bike...

I own a F650 Dakar ’03, which has been great, but I test rode a R1200GS earlier this year – and I want one!

I now have the opportunity to buy an ’05 bike through a dealer – Mill’s in Sunderland - that only has 200 miles on the clock. I am thinking about 2 things - running in and the first service. Sunderland is about 350 miles from Cardiff. Should I expect Mill’s to still provide the first service free? What will a bike that is only 1/3 way through running-in be like? Should I ride it home and get it’s first service down here?

Any thoughts...?

It might be worthwhile contacting your local dealer (Rydales?) first to see what the position is regarding the first service on a bike bought elsewhere. I seem to recall that it is free labour if the supplying dealer does the service, but if you take it elsewhere, they may well charge you for the parts and labour.

Regarding your running in - lots of opinions on this site, consensus seems to be - ride it like you stole it!!

Re your first service - i would try and book it in local, if you can, as by the time you have got it home the mileage will be near 600 anyway (take the long route home)

I would do as Bob wisely suggests and chat to Ryedale first. They may well offer a free first service (well labour, as some of us had to pay about £30 for oil and filter) based on the fact that you may become a regular customer. Are you a regular of Ryedales? If your intending doing your own servicing I'd keep quiet .You may be able to get the first service done labour-cost-free anywhere you choose anyhow...anyone know?

But I would also check what the manufacture date of the bike is and ensure any updates, checks etc have been carried out before you pick it up even though some of these (like a software update) could be done at first service.

I'd also check why the bikes up for sale at 200...a demonstrator?

I assume any warrenty work will be honoured at any dealer, but perhaps folks here would be able to give you an idnication of how forthcoming Ryedales are if they didnt supply the machine. Having to honour the warranty is a little different from houring the warranty AND going an extra mile for a customer.

These are just some of the thoughts that would be going through my mind.

Another option would be to travel up and run the bike in over the weekend say and get the first service done on the Monday. Theres only 400 or so to go....couple of days riding would see it well run in without a possible long motorway run which may not be the best way.

I bought my bike from West Yorkshire, a private sale a 05 1200GS with 50 miles on the clock originally bought from Rainbow BMW , I rode this home to South Wales about 260 miles in all felt like it took a eternity, had the 600 mile service done at Rydales Cardiff a couple of weeks later was charged £180, as for warranty claims on the bike I have had no problem with Rydales, mine just went in to Rydales with an electrical fault, had the bike back the next day with all the problems sorted (poblems encountered are in the thread HOW RELIABLE IS THE 1200GS)

I was very lucky. I ordered my bike through Ocean in Plymouth and moved before it arrived.

Louise at Jefferies called Ocean and 'negociated' for the first service to be done foc by themselves.

Writing this has reminded me of the loyalty I owe to Jefferies.

i have had first services done by honda dealers that didn't supply the bike new. Usually you pay the full price for the service and claim it back from the supplying dealer. As far as I am aware the service price is included in the purchase price.
