New Panigale V4 announced

Sounds like one hell of a machine, 218bhp and wet weight 187Kg (ie unusable on road!). More of a track bike for people with lots of disposable.

Pockets will have to run deep depending on configuration spec:

187 kgs is still bloody heavy .
From memory my GSXR1000K5 was 166 kgs.
How is this 20kgs heavier ? That’s a good size filled suitcase !!
Yes it’s got a better power to weight ratio but it’s still a lump .

It's about the same weight as my old RSVR. Hardly a lump, but yes, lighter bikes around. Not many lighter with that power though.

A few comparisons:

2026 R1: 203Kg
2026 Fireblade: 200Kg
2026 S1000RR: 196Kg (wet with fuel or 184Kg wet, no fuel)

Yes but why are they all 20-40 kgs heavier than litre sports bikes of 20 years ago ?

It's a good question Arsey and one I've also been thinking about. Newer forks tend to be beefier (perhaps a kilo or two there), extra emissions controls, more wiring complexity etc...take your pick. I wonder just how much extra weight is in the emissions gubbins including catalytic converters and end pipes. These can account for a significant additional weight. If I did a decat of my 1340 Suzuki for example and replace end cans with Yoshis, I save close on 20Kg just with those changes. My guess is that a lot of it has to be in the emissions controls differences as Zerax9 points out. Ditto with my Ducati. A full akra system plus decat saves over 10Kg for that.

The GSXR 1000K5 wet weight was 200Kg . This Ducati weighs in at 187Kg wet with no fuel , with fuel it’ll be 200kg

It’s not all backwards. The FireBlade when first released weighed in at 185 kg dry / 205 kg wet, very similar to the bike in the opening post. The big difference is the power of course; the FireBlade was ‘only’ 120 bhp at the time. One hell of a bike, just the same.

Out of vague interest, I looked up the weight and quoted bhp power of the last outright sports bike I owned. 169 kg dry / 199 kg wet, with a quoted power of 193 bhp.

That must be dry. The figures above show the new Panigale at 187 kg, wet, if those are correct.

For lardy road bikes blames Euro regs and exhausts that weight as much as the moon, with thicker engine cases to keep noise down
