New PC what are the first 5 programs would you install

Office pro the whole lot, CS2 the whole suite or later, itunes, quicken or quick books (prob quick books pro it's better) google earth but it's free so don't count.

1) AVG Free
2) Zone alarm Free
3) Windows Defender
4) Photoshop/Imageready
5) MS Orifice

If you're talking about the first 5 AFTER the normal protection stuff, add in

Dreamweaver 8
Acrobat 7 Pro
Mapsource

But I couldn't be without Skype, Azureus, MSN Messenger, Gmail + Notifier, Firefox (actually, that's the first I re-install after the anti virus/firewall stuff)
Winrar/Winzip, Daemon tools 4, Terrapin FTP.

Apart from the firewalls and anti virus stuff and photo stuff... what have the Romans ever done for you or what else:D

Given AVG and adware are free and dont count

OFFICE
PAINTSHOP PRO
NERO PREMIUM
WINRAR
REAL VNC

:thumb2

Well they come with it but first to use are:

Evolution
Firefox
KVIrc
KNode
Open Office

AV? Nah not quite in my top 5 on Linux :) Firewall? - That was up from install.

Cost so far? Nothing

1. AVG :thumb2
2. firefox :thumb2
3. picasa :thumb2
4. outlook 2003 :thumb2 and open office (never used it)
5. bittorrent client :augie :thumb2 Azureus
6. mediamonkey:mad: Musicmatch 8.2
7.foxit pdf reader :thumb2
8.irfanview :thumb2

i find utorrent much quicker and customizable than azureus these days.

open office is much smaller and does 90% of office these days - only for home use though - i only ever open stuff, not create stuff at home.

like foxit is to acrobat 7.0

been using excel2007 last week - nice, except it saves in a 'new' file format . :mmmm

DVD shrink.
DVD FAB.
Windoze XP and feck Vista off for a couple of years, [till they sort it:)]
Google vid player.
Irfanview...
that'll do for me:bounce1

So many I would consider essential that it's difficult to pick a top five:

TClockEx
Nail (a utility to pin windows to the top so they don't keep disappearing when you don't want them to)
XEmacs
Firefox
Thunderbird
(--arbitrary split--)
AVG
Proximodo (a web filter, configured only to allow known trusted sites to do crap like run Javascript, open popup windows and so on, and to kill as many ads as possible)
Ditto (clipboard extender to remember everything I've Ctrl-C/Ctrl-Ins'd)
Azureus
POPFile (email filter)
TweakUI
GraphCalc
WinDirStat
MapSource
OpenTTD
Visual Studio (through work so it's "free")
freeCommander
7-Zip
Spybot Search and Destroy
TweakUI
CDEx
WinAmp
Goldwave (until I find a decent freeware alternative or write my own)
SysInternals stuff
