Hi Tim welcome to the site and to the P.R.C. :thumb All good advice given here so far:pullface but most of us would be recomending BMW GS's Let us know what model/price range and put up a post in the forsale and wanted .The pink ads on the local paper on tuesdays often has bargins in it. ,
Good luck
Jim

Thanks gents - appreciate all the welcomes :beerjug:

I've just come to my senses and realized:

a) I won't have access to my gear until Jan 6 or so,

b) My wife will kill me if I don't:
- Move us into a permanent residence,
- Find a school for the kids
- Buy her a car

before buying a bike.

Clearly #1 is the biggest factor :)

Welcome Tim,

We spoke on yesterday in Keary’s. Hope you have good luck in locating your bike.

As Jimmy and I said, it may be better to look for two bikes if you want good off-road and better on road capabilities. I would highly recommend the GS1200, but then I biased.

Again welcome.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that and have decided to go for the GS and get to know the country first.

I can get a dirt bike later...

I do miss my Husky TE610 though - that is a serious dual sport for colorado!

now for the off road side

I Hope you do not expect the wide open spaces of the ol U S of A , lots of problems with land use and Access.. but you will hear about that anon .
the hot set up for Enduros or off road in ireland is 250cc 2 smoke or 400/450cc four stroke .. and in a lot of events it is 125cc due to the Terrain being so "Tight"
I can loan you a bike for a few weeks "not with a view to selling it " but just for you to get your feet and find out tru "networking" and meeting the Guys. what you require

but look at the market at present ... Ireland is in Recession and a lot of ex "Celtic Tiger's" now need to pay for the house and sell the little used machines they bought

the Euro against the £ Stg has never been stronger so buying in NI or the UK is cheap at present if the bike you are buying is priced right

bikes in Ireland have a extra tax Called VRT and on a new GS is about 1500 Euro

Insurance in ireland is or can be Expensive get a Quote , you might need to get a riding assesment (Where are you McIvor) done

if you buy a bike in Ireland the VRT should be paid if it is on a Irish Plate

if I was in your position, I would buy a basic cheap bike to get me by for a few months and see what you want to do , but Cork is a good spot for "Mature Motorcycleists" and he with Pipe and slippers has yet to come along (Daithi) also have a look at donkeybike.com ....... you will also need a "bum waggler" AKA a Trials Bike .... the latest fashion accessory by the up and comming 'Tosser"

Regards

PG

Yup - already met one of the guys from donkeybike over at the dealer.

I think for now I'm going to stick with just the GS (ie one bike) and spend the time seeing Ireland on road. I need to spend more time with the family anyway until they settle in and make some friends.

Thank you so much for the offer.

I like this site already :thumb

Thanks for the invite - that sounds like fun!

Helllllooooo !

Howya Tim,
there should be a lot of "competitively priced" 1200GS's in the new year, or you could hold out for a
1100 or 1150.
Welcome to the Section and as soon as you get settled in and get a bike let us know and we'll rope
someone in to leading a run. :D

I'm a big fan of doing my own maintenance, so the 1150 is probably the bike for me - but you are right, there are some deals on 1200's out there.

I think it might be time for an 1150 Adventure though :)
