New r1250 gs withheld

On my two R1200 RS's i was shocked that the local BMW Motorrad dealer changed my brake fluid at 6K miles and 12K and was ready to do them again at 16K, The brake lever was moving back to the bar and the fluid was discolored each time, signs of contamination, that is excessive servicing and points towards an issue with the calipers perhaps, That just maybe the reason they are trying the Hayes, who knows, but I'm sure its not a cost cutting exercise, not BMW's way.

Due to collect new r1250 gs exclusive tomorrow
But got phone call from dealer telling me my new bike being withheld due to major recall on front brake calipers and no parts available
What next 😗😚😚
There aren't any recalls listed on the dvla\gov website for the 1250gs, so not sure if "major recall" is correct. May be an BM advisory to dealers for a certain batch of calipers. ??

My new r1250gs exclusive was built 3 weeks ago
Dealer told me Bmw have put a hold on all new r1250 gs being delivered to customers until problem with front brake calipers are sorted
No time given

BMW does it again . When’s the last time they launched a new model without a major flaw ? 1965 ? :-)

Well my new 1250 goes into the dealers Monday for its first service so will see if they highlight any issue with the brakes, I hope not as I’m off to Scotland on Thursday with my son and a couple of mates doing the NC500. I think the bike is fantastic the new engine is great and the gearbox so much smoother than my previous LC and Hexhead.
Fingers crossed lol.

Very happy with my 1250 Exc. Picked up 3 weeks ago, front right hand calliper hand a little drop of grease, oil on it (guess it's from assembly) wiped it off never had a problem since. Thousands of this bike are running already all over the world and most are ok.
Never had a problem on my previous bike with spokes forks etc. Panic sometimes can easily get out of hand. For sure any problems with the brakes will be locked at by BMW and get sorted. (3 years warranty), but it's certainly not a mayor recall.

I bought my R1200RT in UK a few years ago, flew it to Brunei where I was working, 3 days to fly out. 2 months to clear customs, day of collection BMW recalled all New RT’s for new Shock Absorbers.

Shocks classed as hazardous goods so they would not fly new ones out. That was another 3 months.

I feel your pain, not being able to collect.

Did it look anything like in the picture below.

Hi
These new front brakes are made by Hayes - their core business is mountain bike brake systems - and a few "off the peg" double bloc calipers. Not single bloc. You can literally buy them from a catalogue.
Shame, shame on BMW!! - They chose this cost cutting option for all new 1250 models - no just the GS range - the new S1000RR plus RT etc all have them fitted. So doing the maths, it was a major cost cutting exercise. Despite Brembo making a strong name for themselves across many years of perfecting braking systems for moto. Obliviously Hayes don't do the back brakes, because these are still Brembo, otherwise the course of action from BMW would have been the same. I have read a recent thread saying that the front brakes are leaking brake fluid.
I've owned 4 BMWs from new including my current R1200GSA - and Ive held off buying a new 1250, until the usual initial cliches are sorted - one reservation I had was the front brakes. I've test ridden the new R1250 GS and the brakes work fine (actually, more initial bite than the Brembos) but if they are not reliable then what is the point?
All in the name of shareholder value - not the punter in the street.
I hope you get this resolved but this could be major issue for all new 1250 owners.
Rant over!

Sorry, but Hayes have been supplying Harley with their motorcycle brakes for years, so they are not exactly new to motorcycle brakes. How do you know its a cost cutting exercise, do you have inside knowledge, if so, please share. Also I asked my dealer about this and they told me that they have already serviced quite a few 1250s and are on their second batch of demo bikes, none have had issues. Mine is due a service next month, keeping an eye out for leaks, so its obviously not every calliper.

If it’s not a major concern why won’t they let me pick up my new bike and let me see if there is problem on my bike or not

I run a medium size engineering company making machines for Agfa, Fuji, Kodak etc... one thing is sure, the price won't be more :D and it wasn't done for quality purposes was it?

It is making me a bit annoyed that some lads on here think you may have fabricated this or are embellishing the truth a bit in the name of 1250 bashing/scare mongering.

Guy's, this happened yesterday afternoon, so maybe your communications with your dealers are a bit out of date.

If anyone wants to check.......this is either Kearys of Cork or Duffy's of Dublin.

Give them a buzz if you fancy.........

No dealer will admit this is a major problem. One of the reasons I moved away from BMW was the shoulder shrugging and denial of well publicised issues by more than one dealer. If only they were just open and honest with their customers. As to the change of brake manufacturer not being a cost cutting exercise, are you serious?

Edit - What I will say is that BMW are probably the best in the industry at warranty repairs, and will go out of their way to keep their customers happy. I don’t know of any other bike manufacturers that would deliver a 5 Series while your bike is being repaired. So if you were to have a major recall with any manufacturer, BMW is the one to have it with!

Why the Brakes on my 1250 are brilliant much prefer them to the Brembos feel sorry for the Guys that have had issues but are BMW any worse than Honda/KTM

My Honda VFR1200 front calipers siezed at 70 mph in the fast lane of M6 motorway.....

Salt buildup made them sieze. Got rid of bike as became a recurring theme..... needed to remove and clean calipers every week.
