New rear pads - down to canvas after 2000 miles!

I might have caught the wrong information, but I seem to recall that there was a view that the servo/ABS systems does an 80:20 split at average braking forces, thereby placing most of the load onto the back.

Presumably that's with just the front lever being used? :nenau

I wonder what the loading ratios are if the rear pedal is also in use. ie is this a somewhat converse situation whereby using the rear pedal actually reduces the braking forces pushed to the back? I got the feeling from talking to the dealer that I'd be better using both pedals rather than just the front. My first set of rear pads lasted 3,400 and I adapted my driving to style to just use the front - and then the 2nd set lasted 1,700 miles.

It would be useful to find out what the official BMW Service issue gubbins actually says.

Update from Gaz

Last night Jamie Diggins emailed Harkan Suleyman (BMW customer services manager) and requested he give me a call to explain why if the pads are not under warranty why has he deemed i can have the cost of the disc only - i want to know why - anyway did i get a call - did i hell - so i left work early got in at 5.15 and called - guess what he left ten mins earlier - ok i will talk to shevonne - she knows all about this - guess what shes gone as well - mmmmmmmmmm i could smell that up the ISDN line

Regarding Garfields email

Hi Gaz,

Not sure of what the actual code is but there definitely is one. My dealer********** was informed (by me) that Vines of Guilford had replaced pads under warranty. My dealer rang Vines and was told of this warranty code. Result was that my disk and pads were replaced under warranty.

If your dealer wants to ring ********the person who knows all about it there is *************

Hope this helps and let me know how you get on.

(blocked out info because of whats below)

well here goes

vines have been fitting pads & discs under warranty BUT doing it under the wrong code
the code they have been using was for sticking pads
not disintigrating pads
and all the warranty work they have been doing they aint getting paid for it when the next warranty audit is done by BMW

you gotta laugh
not only are they having us over with pads that are crap and wont even meet the first 6000 mile service and doing our discs in as well
sounds like now BMW have a plan to F**k their own dealers over to

As funny as it seems what we really ought to do is stick up for Vines because as a dealer at least they recognised that there is a problem with those crap pads and did somthing about it to keep the customer happy - which is a lot more than the MBW machine is doing

Spoke to a BMW dealer in Ireland who was very helpful and said he would get a tech guy to call to talk about this

there was also a major change in his voice when i said trading standards had got hold of this brake pad failure and what BMW were up to - i gave them all the details of this thread to get a better picture of what the situation was.

Jamie Diggins (BMW customer services) also told me again how the fault was all down to the way we ride our bikes and BMW have absolutly no idea how long a set of pads will last - when i told him i was told by Frey Auto's BMW in Austria that the life of the pads should be 10K - 15K Km
he said that bloke didnt know what he was talking about and shouldnt have told me
(he was the service manager):clap nice one BMW customer services keep up the good work

05 55 no ABS model 10,000 when i changed the bike for another new none abs bike, front 3/4 worn, rear about 1/2 :beerjug: (dont waste your cash on ABS):thumb

PHEW ! No problem.

I've just read through this thread from the start and was getting VERY nervous about my pad situation.I'm just back from the Garage,the racing heart is slowing down and i can report;
My 06 1200 GS (ABS),First used 03/04/06, 670 miles on Std Cast Wheels.17" 1200ST Wheels fitted @ 1st Service.Mileage now 6644 and having just checked, there is plenty of meat on both rear pads.I'm assuming that the grooves through the front pads are wear indicators? There is a lot of pad left if so. The bike (1 of 3 in the Toy Cupboard) has been used for leisure use only, including going to the Manx GP 06 and TT 07.During that time,it has not been out in much bad weather, only commuted on (22 miles e/w) a few times,i've not ridden like a wuss (i ride briskly, sometimes too briskly-14 days of a 56 day ban to go) and as far as i can remember,i have not used the rear brake pedal.I make no judgements about the use or riding style of others,i'm just posting this for people to compare with their situation.

update 4 u

glad your pads are ok
one extra thing i have learned this week
that hole in the side of the pad
the one that lets you see the disc if its worn
be careful that you know exactly what you are looking at
cos i think i may have been looking at a hole
that was ful of dust & crap etc
what we are supposed to do
is give it a clean out every now and again
so if it did go we could spot it quicker
most important thing
buy three sets of say ebc pads or steptoes ones
and change the lot
then just ride and ride and ride
and enjoy the bike
cos i gotta admit
its one hell of a good bike
and i love it
have a good weekend everyone
off to Basingstoke tonight
my friendly dealers Sat for a service
Manchester to get Les Wassel to fit 35w HID's in my spots
Norfolk next weekend
France week after
mmmmmmmmmmmm
loads of biking
Stay safe

The wear holes are harder to read than just looking from the back of the bike at the pads on the pins, easy peasy, far quicker and more accurate ;)
