Compression on my R100GSPD is about 120lbs each side. The pushrod tube seals are weeping slightly. It has done 95000 kms. If I re ring it and tidy up the head when replacing the seals do you think there will be a noticeable improvement in performance?

Not looking for eye popping power just want to know whether to bring forward the rebuild if the improvement is significant or just keep on riding it until next winter and tackle it then.

Peering in thru the plug hole (makes a change from keyholes:D) the bore looks good, the valves have plenty of meat on them and the piston is cleanish. (I think I am beginning to answer my own question :))

As you probably know the Bike has entered the realms of "poor compression", as I think below 120 psi is deemed to be.

I am not sure if you have answered you own question as I get the impression from your posting that you do not feel that any work needs doing.

As you know Airheads will run on and on but it looks to me as though it may be worthwhile to do some work, (at least dismantle the cylinders to see what the problem is), if you are that way inclined, but I would recheck the compression again and maybe use a different compression gauge just to make sure the readings are accurate.

Are both readings the same

IME you are more likely to burn oil as well as loose compression if the bores/rings are fekked.

If no oil is being burnt just sort the oil leak, re seat the valves and remember when checking compression use a WOT (wide open throttle) as you need the air in the cylinder to be able to compress it:thumb2

plus check compression with an engine at normal operating temperature and a good, fully charged, battery..........but presumably you know that........also be careful not to damage the ignition system

I suppose my inclination is to freshen it up before it desperately needs it. A top end rebuild is cheap and easy even with new valve guides etc.

If I do it then I know it's as good as it can be. Probably chuck in a new timing chain at the same time.

Because I haven't owned it for long and don't know its history this work would bring it up to scratch and remove any uncertainty about its condition. Reassuring if departing on a long trip:)

I was planning to rebuilt my heads :) … my bike heads … since the bike is now with 140 000 kms. Is there any engine expert that sells used rebuilt “free flow” heads?
