New RT test ride

Good stuff here!

I've a 4 valve 2011 RT and had the 2 valve 1200 before that. I've tried the new one, I've got 2 kids in private school and I commute in London so in reverse order:

RT great for running from Kent to Central London, does the M'ways great and can kepp up with the Vespa's in town
1 kid = a new RT, they're not in year 11+ yet, that my friend is cheap!
New RT - not convinced, you can't hide the 50 KG that's appeared in this form. I think my one is the gem (way better than the 2 valve) and of course last of the air cooled bikes. Remember when Porsche went from 993 to 996? If you haven't tried one do, you could save a packet.

Trouble was I tried a S1000R at the same time and 500 quid appeared before I knew it....:)

Should the rest of us be impressed that your kids are in private schools? Why mention it otherwise?

(more money than sense comes to my mind)

I assume merely to compare the cost of the new RT against a years prep school fees for one of their sprogs?
Whereas I could afford to buy my RT because I don't spend 16kpa on school fees......its all about priorities

True, like a transalp or something... Thought abt it, new toy tickle won me over. Plus there are the 3k touring miles I do once a year. Bigger personal dithering was wether I d go for a 10-11k twin cam from say 2012, rather a 17k fully loaded one. A bit of dirtying and scuffing around the city on a brand new machine etc etc. thoughts too, but as I said, new toy factor won.

Depreciation etc, I don't really factor around. If I wanted a 15-20k investment I d put it elsewhere. I buy cars or a bikes like I buy a laptop , I.e. That I will get zero back after I m done. After all the big D eats everything. 3 years on the best maintained shiny example has 55% of value left over, the worst example probably around 45%. On 15k initial price that's less than 2k difference between my scratched and tired rt in June 2017 to yours. My life view is that these are toys to be paid for and enjoyed to the full as we only live once and I certainly don't live to keep my bike clean and shiny in case big brotha bmw final value accountants disagree with my treatment of the machine. It has to be safe and sound, to be operational and reliable for what it does. Whether the panniers are scratched or whether I washed it last in Feb 2014 or in February 2013, who cares. I have an 06 tmax I bought in 09 that I have never washed or polished ( but it is being serviced) you know what? It looks ok.. Ish. If I thought abt depreciation, it would probably mean I can't really afford it and that would eat me away slowly. Plus I have two kids in London private schools which in case you don't know is an RT per year. New. Each. The ways of this bloody world eh?
:beerjug:

great to here your reasoning it makes total sense to me and if you can afford it and like it then why not. looks like you've tried all the other avenues regarding 125s, bigger scooters ,dedicated commuter bikes etc etc. i expect over say a 5 year term the cost is not that great and with children in private schooling i expect it may not be your highest priority. good luck with it , i fancy a test ride on one soon .:thumb

and rtosser whats a 2v 1200 ? do you mean the single cam, pre 2010 models

no idea where you got that idea from ?? how funny

(green eyed monster springs to mind)

Mention of your children's private education in the context of a discussion on motorbikes, yes a natural pairing! Why did I ever think it was anything other

Give me a break !!!

As a recent convert from GS to Rt's I take a look here occasionally for interesting posts . This one really does take the biscuit !!!! What a load of old tosh ! If you think you fancy a particular bike , go buy one ! If unsure don't . It's simple for feck sake give us all a break from this inane crap .

Did not mean to offend chaps, keep your panties on. I did not go to school at all. Coming from a v poor place in Southern Europe. And as an inferiority complex I feel I ought to give my kids whatever I never got.

Anyway the comment was meant to display that I have amounts of debt and general expenses that make any bike's depreciation patterns or extra value because of condition not relevant to me. If my hobby was to clean and polish, I would. It isn't, so I don't.

Again apols if I sounded arrogant and more moneyed than sensed. I probably am on both counts. I live in London after all, so it makes total sense, no?

Interesting...
I remember a few months ago I went to a local bike meet and there was an older guy there standing proudly at the side of his 1150, his introduction and opening line to me was 'I've tried those bikes and I don't like em' he was referring to my 2008 GS adventure.
A couple of days later when telling the story to a mate, he maybe summed it up....what he meant to say was, he would love one but couldn't afford one!
I'm pretty sure he wouldn't like my new RT either :D

Some say it's not about the bike, it's about the journey and people you meet?

Agree with that, but the bike is part of the experience too.
