New S1000XR

No interest whatsoever. The S1000 engine is great for the track, but it is simply a poor engine choice for touring/road riding/and anything an upright touring style bike wants to do.

Lack of DDC

There are many things 'missing' from the XR, LED headlight, TPM, journey trip, soft suspension setting, and ineffective heated grips. It was disappointing BMW didn't include these on the XR so they could be added at a later stage to tempt those who bought them to trade in for the revised and updated model.

Didnt realise the XR being a close cousin of the RR & R has ESA rather than DDC which does offer a "soft" setting.

From memory of test rides on the XR when it was launched, didnt like the screen in either position, actually prefer the naked R for its lack of turbulent air despite the wind pressure at higher speeds.

Looks like its a minor facelift this time, roll on mk3!

I must be in the minority on here, love the XR, handlebar buzz no big shakes to me and the ability to have sportsbike handling in a comfy riding position is the perfect combo.

Most of my riding is fast twisty stuff, my GS just wasn't up to it and the XR in a different world. Yes its a much more revy engine, just back from a 2K blast round the Pyrenees and once my style adapted to the noise it was a joy.

I had been a twin man, still have my 996 but I ache after only a few miles these days, every ride on the XR is a pleasure.

Everyone is different of course, to me the XR is perfect, my new new one's been delivered to AJ and I'm collecting on Saturday :D:D:D

Yep - I originally hated the XR, but I had a Conversion on the Road To Damascus, and I love mine. It replaced an S1000R.

Vibes are reduced at least 95% by bar end weights and km/miles on the engine.

I find the suspension much more compliant in road mode than my S1000R. Now that was hard...sore arse hard...

The engine? It is an i4 - you have to rev it. It has the sportbike gearbox from the R and RR, so 1-2 are long and 6 is short(ish).

It is the easiest bike to ride fast in twisties that I have owned. It handles like it is on proverbial rails, the QS is outstanding up and down the box, the super dooper leaned over ABS-thingy works a treat (you can brake right up to the apex if you are game), the brakes are excellent and the induction howl from the engine is addictive. Oh, and it goes pretty well over 6K...:D

It really isn't a GS replacement - I still love my GS. The bikes are very different.

I use the XR as an upright sport bike, but some people tour on them.

I've been saying this for a year !

The suspension is fine on mine. As I said, much more compliant than my R.

I rode my GS for 3 days this week. A totally different bike.

The suspension is fine on the XR, I have no complaints at all. For spirited riding its streets ahead of the GS - but there again the GS isn't supposed to be a sports bike like the XR.

I read a couple of time that some people feel the engine lacks character and I'm puzzled by that. Its an I4 and as such its a damned good one, i find the howl of the standard bike really intoxicating and the outright speed is mind blowing.

As I've said previously I was a twin man, but twins are equally compromised in different areas. I guess its a case of whatever floats your boat. Sometimes in the automotive world, characterful means "less good" having experienced character in abundance in an Alfa, I was glad to return to the hum-drum world of motoring, that actually works...

Just my thoughts.

I had an LC GSA and for various reasons found it unsatisfactory. A decision to give up riding on the roads for a while was minutes away until a perky salesman gave me the keys to the demo XR.
20 minutes later I was signed up. Top spec with an MRA screen and I couldn't be more pleased with what has really made me and the girl friend very happy.
Little or no vibes, fast and comfortable, perhaps a touch thirsty but I can live with that. Any body finding riding a tad dull should have a test ride. Brilliant bike.

Just ordered one today at Jeffries at Baildon. They lent me one for a weekend in the summer and I loved it. This bike seems to get slated for a few things that it has got wrong, and not always praised for the many, many other things that it has got right. Unfortunately it isn't coming til March 1st, but with salt, snow and winter to come, it was the only decision to make. Still keeping the GS LC as I agree, they are very different rides. Oh, and the wife made me pick the Red one.
I fancied that new Ocean Blue, but if her indoors wants red, ..... I'm happy if she's happy.

Well done, you'll love it. Mine hasnt been use for a couple of months but I'm looking forward to waking it up in the new year.

Are the 2017 XR's available in the UK yet?

Not yet according to my local dealer to test ride, but they may well be available to order. Someone above has one on order for March 1st delivery.

I've just ordered one for March delivery after testing the 2016 model which I thought was great.

Ordered my XR SE Sport in Ocean Blue two weeks back. Popped in the dealers yesterday and it's a week 3 build, week 6 delivery and in the garage for 1st March. Looking forward to a silky smooth fast revving four again:D:D

Hi, You'll get everything bar the silky smooth thing.
These engines are rough at best of times in all 3 guises.

Really? There must have been something wrong with your demo bike then, as mine is extremely smooth.;)
