New telly needed (wanted) !

I`m after a new telly about 42" or so either LCD or Plasma and was looking at a sony kdl 40v4000, it got a 5* rating in What Hi Fi telly test but was wondering if theres anything else worth a look for around £5- 600 notes?

Any suggestions?

Save yourself a lot of time:

Buy a Panasonic plasma. Peferable the models ending with 85!

It's great! And I am not on HD or even digital TV !! Just analog (but digital in the works..)

I do some work for a company exporting IT . I get mailers from suppliers and one of them was doing a decent Samsung 42 " Plasma deal with a FREE matching Upscaling DVD player that looked half decent for around £650 . If they are doing it I bet you could get a similar deal elsewhere by shopping around.

Looking at this now Panasonic TH42PX80 Plasma

Older Plasma (especially) and even the newer Plasma TV's in some circumstances can &will suffer from 'Burn In' A typical example of this is if your kids regularly watch 'cbbc' then after a while you could find their logo permanently burnt into the TV screen...just like old PC Monitors.

Latest Plasma TV's have gizmo's to try and stop this but it still happens long term.

I have just bought the Sony KDL-40W4500 (5* What Hi Fi) and its a cracking telly, it was £999 in the Sony centre sale with free 5 year warranty. I was originally going to go for the KDL-40W4000 (5* What Hi Fi) which I think is the same money that your looking at but a better telly than the KDL-V range. The W4500 & W4000 were together and when you see the picture difference it is quite amazing, the 4500 have a better contrast and Hz so really good.

Another thing to watch is if you intend to watch SD telly more than anything then make sure you look at all the channels in SD. Show rooms have the nasty habit of keeping the TV's on HD...there is a big difference especially as the screen size gets bigger. Big TV's are great in HD but if you sit to close in SD the picture is very pixelated. I should have a 46" TV for my room but sat 90" from the TV the pic was poor in SD so try to look before you buy.

Finally I went with the Sony TV as they are regarded as having an excellent picture straight out the box, a lot of the Samsung TV's require a lot of adjusting in the menu systems to get the best from them.
Oh and the I don't think that Pannie your considering is 1080P if thats what your looking for.

What Hifi 5* rating for 2yrs running, but only 37". These are not full HD, but are a better compromise if you spend much time watching SD as the image isn't being stretched too far like on some tv's. After a little online searching, I found a voucher code that brought the price down to £1007 for both sets, incl delivery. 100,000 panel life & 100hz gives a great image. Panasonic are reckoned to be the best picture available at the moment.

Well I`ve just got back from Dixons with that exact same telly £500 + £50 for a stand

Wife and mate are playing on the Wii on the old telly now so I`ll have to set up the new one the morrow

Been doin lotsa research before I spend my hard earned cash.... Lots of sales on but mostly shops are clearing out all the non 1080p and non 100 hz tellies !!
Ive kind of come to think the Panasonic TX37LZ85 (£600) must be close to best value but I want free-sat. Anyone got free-sat...is it good and worth it ?
Deffo want 37-40" 1080p 100hz LCD (a little future proof then !)
Ive seen new sony's with 200hz in the shops already !! (£1600) and they are talking even higher soon !?

...but useful as I'm in the market for a telly.

Can anyone comment on the suggested power consumption of these Plasma TV's (now that you all have them for a month or so ) ??

The spec on the Curry's site for the Panasonic TH37PX80 37" Plasma TV states "On power consumption = 235 KWh/24hr (Power usage when up and running)".

If that's the case ..........then its ENORMOUSLY power-hungry! That would suggest a running cost of approx €1.60 (over here...) per hour (ie per 10KWh usage). If thats true, it's gonna be very costly indeed (not to mention environmentally very unfriendly) over a years use (say 4 hours a day = €2000+ per annum approx).

I've probably got that wrong somewhere .....hopefully!

Just checked a few other places...............it looks as if the fcukwits in Currys have strange way of depicting power figures on their website. Here's the link Click on the "View technical specification" link.

I can only assume that the figure of 235KWh/24Hr usage actually reflects an ANNUAL figure if used 24Hrs a day or something like that. Bloody confusing though

Panasonic PX80

I have just been through the which TV do I buy situation.

I finally went for a Panasonic 37 PX 80 plasma after much research they also do a 42". The set is not 1080 but it is 100Hts. I was told you don’t really need the 1080 as I would not be able to tell the difference.

I bought the set from Richer Sounds as this was the best price I could find with a 5yr warranty. I paid £550. I think this set is being superseded so they are hard to find.
