new to bmw, favour a bobber or ride till it dies?

Heads went off to the Mowbray Guru for vapour, valves, guides, seats etc. Quite some pocket on that exhaust valve.

Id love to see the workshop of whoever put all that red sealant in, must be like some horror show. How do you ensure none of that crap is blocking an oilway somewhere?

Workshop? Maybe a cave somewhere although I reckon your average neanderthal would have made a better job!

Carry on Malty! Looking forward to the ongoing horror show! :D

The engine had been running for some time with the red goo mods installed so either damage was historic and engine didn't rattle or the previous owner was lucky.

The cases were vapour blasted so all of the gallery plugs are removed to clear any media. I rigged a water wash, followed by an air line. Paranoia had me steam it and finally blow it through again.

The mains and big end shells were scored - not badly - but since it's a full rebuild out they came to be replaced. The crank was fine, not a mark on it and I suspect some debris and not the goo had done the damage, hence the new oil rotors. I always find blast media trapped behind the rear main bearing no matter how hard I've tried to clean it. So the rebuild had new mains and shells. Everything else was perfect, cam, followers, rockers etc etc.

Always a twitchy 'ring moment' on first start but everything was fine and tearing down the oil filter didn't show anything.

I know my limits, so paint off to a painter (owner of the bike) and frame etc off to powder.

Another project has sneaked it's rev counter into this picture. Anyone have a guess..

A tease from the front. This frame has no cross-brace between the downtubes. The pot noodle is for bolts - I don't eat that stuff :augie

On to the fire strings... What is a bloody VW connector abomination thingy doing in the middle of a BMW loom. This one has seen some proper bodgit action of the first order. The loom was broken completely apart, repaired, bodges removed and retaped.

Buy a new loom.... far easier than chasing the problems incessantly in the old brittle wiring.

Agreed but there's often life left in an old loom if it's not corroded. This one was worth the effort as a lot of the trouble was dirt and bodgers.

Done some wiring loom work on my R1100RT (1999) replacing some connecters from neutral switch and other work, found the stranded copper wires had turned black under insulation (Oxidization) and wouldn't solder,
used Sodium Bicarbonate, or baking soda to clean.

Exquisite work from the best of the ham-fisters here. Someone had stripped the thread in the final drive unit but there's an easy solution but only for the most talented bodgers - simply get a massively oversized bolt and hoof the bloody thing up cutting a new thread (badly) in the casting. Why people can't stop and ask advice of those who know what to do I've no idea - I learnt almost everything by stopping and asking those who know. So this one was a problem. It won't helicoil or time-sert as there's not enough material left in the casting. It looks like there is in the photo but there aint. Time to consult a fella who's been running his machine shop for 40 years. He agreed, no standard fixes. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

So.... I cut an oversized thread properly and made up an oversized plug and then had the machine shop mill a standard sized hex nut on the plug. It looks right but unfortunately I didn't take a photo of it - I must have been too distressed. Next time I see the bike I'll get take a photo.

Turning the corner and starting to put things back together.... much better for the soul.

Heads back from Mikeyboy. New mains in, crank and cam etc in. Now who will help me lift the motor into the frame during a lock-down? Wifey, where are you?

Shameful, utterly unacceptable, embarrassed, sorry, sorry, sorry, the bloody stella fridge is empty. :nono

Mmm, that's coming along nicely.

Is the alloy of the FD unit unsuitable for welding up then re-drilling and tapping to the original spec?
