OK- I have been bitten by the BMW bug..but realise I must have deep pockets and the mechanical skills to get me out of trouble. Convince me otherwise!
Im OK on previous Bikes..but feel engine protectors are an absolute must.

Im planning a trip in the future which will feature stuff like this

The standard engine bars and cylinder head protectors on a GSA are more than man enough to cope with anything you can throw at it.
 
My GSA came with engine bars, what year is yours and welcome.
 
thanks for the welcome...its a 2004 & has no engine bars...I need some!
 
The 1200 Adventure OEM engine bars are crap. They bend back in a crash raise stress on the cover bolts and risk cracking the cylinder head where the bolts screw in.
On the other hand the OEM rocker cover protectors are more than tough enough.
One yet another hand rocker covers are no more costly than a decent set of protectors.
What they need are some skid blocks made from racer rep crash bung material.

Top marks for the BMW engine bars. If it didn't deform on heavy impacts the engine casting takes the brunt of the force and can possibly fail later on. Dropped mine a few times during my apprenticeship with a BMW R1200GSA. Steep learning curve for first time on such a tall heavy bike. Loved it. Tom bought mine and I have upgraded :green gri to an en-suite. Do't be too worried about fitting bars. The cylinder head protectors are good enough for most of the time plus cleaning the thing is much easier without the scaffolding. Just go and enjoy it.
 
I'd recommend Hepco & Becker bars for an '04 1200, they saved my bike in a medium speed low side crash.
 
It's not simply about the bike falling off its stand or getting dropped in Tesco car park.

I dropped my bike on a mud covered back lane. Speed <20mph. The right hand engine bar shifted the rocker cover back and the cover had to be unbolted before I could get the crash bar off the engine. The cover was wedged against the valve rocker gear. The Touratech head cover protector was toast and bent its mounting bolts.

If the bike had had simply had head protectors (any brand) there would have no more damage and no risk to the valve gear. So much for the OEM engine bars being anything more than window dressing.

The Hepco & Becker bars actually protect the rocker covers. Are we sure that Impact bad enough to mash the rocker cover won't result in mashed crank cases?
 
OK- I definitely have an R1200GS 2004....that "Florence" no mark sold it to me ;-)
I have plastic "shrouds" over the ends of the engine(rocker covers)
I would like some bars that I feel would protect the engine.
Are my "feelings" correct or should I just learn to ride the bike & not fall off?
(past history dictates this may be harder than writing!)

I have asked in the wanted section...but alas..without success!

This was my last trip ...im the good looking one with the panty liner under my nose!
