Ive just ordered b/b & I am wanting to d/load films, music & progs the usual stuff I suppose what sites do you recomend & what advice do you have on file sharing sites?
Ive heard that you get a lot of viruses off these types of sites I am running avg will it detect the virus as it d/loads thje file or do I have to check it when its on my computer.
Any other tips on b/b greatfully accepted many thanks Malc

bittorrent is what i'd recommend for albums, apps & movies.

check out listings here

don't use standard bt client linked on that site, use bitornado.

i've never had a virus from a bt file.

i've been meaning to give azureus a try for a while now. many bt people rate it as the best client. can your friend tell us in what way is it better?

looked a bit complex to me. bitornado is pretty simple & easy.

i am registered with pirate bay, but use supranova 'cos it's easy (there's a pattern forming here  )

i will definitely check out your, er friends wikipedia link when my bandwidths not so chocked downloading as it is at the moment :D

i need a faster connection ;)

My friend has both a linux and a windows PC. He tells me that he likes Azureus because it is the same client on both (because it uses Java) It isn't really that much more complicated. One of the nice features is to double click on a downloading torrent and get an extra few tabs of information including a list of the files that are downloading showing their progress and (neat feature) allowing you to double click and launch any files that are at 100%. So if you were to download, say, an album, you could preview any of the tracks that have downloaded and decide to dump the whole download if you don't like what is coming down.

Or so I'm told...

I hope I can contribute something to this discussion in the form of Usenet/newsgroup membership. I was sceptical at first and am now a convert.

In the past I had too many disappointing results when downloading from Kazaa, Emule, Edonkey MIRC etc. etc. There was one specific film I downloaded at least 3 times and it turned out to be something else every time.

Someone at work recommended Easynews - I joined up about 8 months ago and have not regretted it once. Yes, it does cost you something but the quality is outstanding. It is $9.99 per calendar month or 10GB download whichever comes first, at the present exchange rate that is about £5.80 which I consider to be a fair price for first rate files at my ADSL connections max speed at all times.

There are other such providers out there who do have different pricing structures but overall I can only recommend Easynews.

this sounds like 'ramping'.

new member ?

promoting a ' pay for' service ?

best thing since sliced bread ?

priceless.

Being a new member (to this forum and forums? in general) as you state, I am unfortunately not aware what exactly you mean by "ramping".

Seeing that I am waiting for my GS (previous bike traded in already) I cannot contribute much regarding the bike and decided that I might be able to help out other Forum users by sharing my PC knowledge, whatever the standard of that knowledge (I earn my living working in an IT department!).

Just to clarify my previous post then here it goes:

Enter "newsgroups" on google and wait for the results. There are a number of services listed on the first results page including Giganews, athenanews, corenews etc. etc. Yes, Easynews is not listed but is the one that I have personally subscribed to for about 10 months and am very happy with. As stated in the earlier post there are many other services out there and they all have different price structures and retention rates which might suit some people better than others.

I personally have no financial interest in promoting the service - Easynews is based in the US as far as I can tell from my Credit Card statements - I live in the UK. Make of it what you like, I was just trying to offer an alternative to downloading Men in Black II 3 times only to find that it is actually another useless bit of Hollywood output. I was at least as sceptical as you until I tried it - it might have helped that somebody I worked with at the time logged on in front of me and showed me what is available.

Next time you are near Nottingham let me know - I am quite happy to demonstrate exactly how it works.
