New to GS's

Hi, I'm new to the forum, looking at getting a 1200GSA. Being 6ft 4, it seems a good choice for comfort / size.

I won't ask any questions yet as I will search the forums. But if anyone has any tips on what to look out for etc would be appreciated?

Currently have a Honda CB1300. Just reading lots about the models etc....and boy do they hold their value!

Hopefully prices will drop a little when the new one is available!

welcome! you might have a long wait, gsa water cooled not following on for about a year after the GS.

with the mileage and specs - you'd struggle to do better.... and it has all the extra's that would normally cost an arm & leg!

I'm 6'4" and have the GSA on the highest settings due to my long legs and size 12 clodhoppers........... THIS is a nice bike!

unless its outwith your budget you want a 2010 dohc (new engine much improved) you also want dynamic and premium packs (all toys but most importantly what most people look for, easier to trade or sell later on).

just like the 1 goose highlighted above.

Half the fun is getting it kitted out once it's in your garage

You can also then concentrate on the stuff you think you really need but don't , rather than the stuff the previous owner thought he needed but didn't

I couldn't do it. I couldn't hand over so much for a S/H bike after reading about some of the probs. So have bought a new KTM SMT. Learnt alotr from these forums including the kTM part.

Have the soft luggage, tail pack, bobbins, frame protectors, camel toe thing, all in for £9250 and I can have it after the winter for March 1st Registration.

Also get first service half price.

Couldn't stretch to a GS but will get me touring!

Sounds like a damn fine deal though, and with a couple of years warranty you can't really go wrong, probably only get a 3 year old GS for that sort of money - and even then not a fully loaded one.

I am sure it will look after you, if you look after it, happy touring

Yep read a little about the fueling, but some say its better on the later ones. I do like the GS's but ideally would an adventure and with a new one in a year or so's time and potential teething problems. The KTM 999 Water cooled engine has been out a few years now so hopefully they would have sorted any problems.

Am chuffed, be nice having a new bike.

In my experience a vertical screen too far from the rider causes horrible buffeting. Then the makers put a flip on top to make it even worse.

Yep been reading about buffering.
There are a few screens available for the SMT. The Givi one looks quite good and some people put a spolier on them.

I had and MRA on my Diversion 900. Well made, but the screen is flip-topped so causes turbulence. The spoiler angle goes from low and parallel to the screen to near vertical making the turbulence even worse to unendurable. I tried different length support legs for the spoiler but it was never any good.

So according to that, if the screen is straight or better curved back towards the rider its likely to be smooth to sit behind. If its steeply angled and/or flipped at the top expect it to be rough to sit behind.
