If its not the main oil seal it will be O rings on the brake spindle.

Do a search on here for the brake spindle repair.

I did a write up with photos.

Need to change 2 piece sleeve for a one piece sleeve, fit new o rings.

Bingo.

Also, I recently skimmed the drum by 0.008".

Makes the brake really smooth.

Thanks, shoes soaked in oil, main oil seal not good, backplate has blue instant gasket visible, I was suspicious of brake spindle you have confirmed my fears, looks like rebuild time, shame the bits will take ages to arrive, gives me a chance to read your writeup.

Thanks guys, removed the spindle, oil poured out so I guess it was over filled, replaced the O rings, drained and put in fresh oil, and all was good.

Took it to show my old man, who had one from new and banged on about it ever since, and what inspired me to get one forty years later, 80 mile round trip, utterly fantastic and totally faultless.

Now got to clean it and take the final drive to bits to replace all the seals.

You rode it for 80 miles ! ... no one actually rides them. They're just for polishing and looking at :D.

I helped do the original advertising photographs (shot by Graham Ford) of the GS when it was first launched.. i was the only one of the photographers who had a motorbike license, and had to take it out and try and get it all muddy and looking like it had been somewhere remote.
Very hard seeing as the studio was just off the harrow road in west london, Woodfield studios, Woodfield road. .

We ended up rubbing mud all over it from the roadworks by the studio. :D

I ride and drive all my old toys, the G/S will be used offroad in the spring, tho not in the mud, and I will resist the temptation to apply spray on mud :)
