Hi I'm new to this site as well as being new to two wheels.
Me and the one to be obeyed are just taking our test next week. We bought
2 brand new Honda XR125s to get some miles in before the test. I been trawling through bike after bike, looking for our first bigger bikes. Finally decieded on a 650GS, it fits the bill well as we want to tour, best if we both have the same bike as we want to tour for long periods and it means sense on carrying spares, neither of us wants a sports bike, need to get good MPG, we live in the mountains of snowdonia so need a bike that corners well on the shitty chippings they put on the tarmac around here, and most important were both short, me 5'8" the wife 5'4". I had to lower the forks in the yolks on her 125 so she could touch with both feet, the XR has a seat height of 820mm. I understand the 650GS is 780 which is perfect for both of us. So in essence we are looking to buy 2 x secondhand 650GS, are there any common issues or weakness/faults I should look out for? I am mechanically minded but with a good service history, and cared for what would be deemed "high mileage" on these bikes? Would the 650GS be a good first big bike?
The other question I have is regarding the 650CS, our local bike dealer has one in, belt drive?? anybody got any information/knowledge of these?

I can read bike mag reviews, read what the manufacturer says, what is important is what the end user says after years of riding one.
So hopefully someone out there can give me some sound advice or maybe sell me a bike. Neil n Nikki.

Welcome to the site and to the world of the GS and BMW, can't really help on the info you require, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly. In the mean time, take a look at the 650 section on the site as there is loads of info on there that will help i'm sure :thumb2

Hi, yeah I've already had a good look around over the last couple of days, just make me want a GS even more!

If you do get the bikes ewe want before early May bank holiday, ewe could always join us at the Treasure Hunt in Talgarth
http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132053 :augie Just bring a tent and some beer tokens. Let me know so I can book ewe in :D That way you will meet a lot of tossers, and wifeys taking shite and telling you their opinions of all and sundry :augie:D

Welcome to the site, good choice with the 650gs, why not come along to the treasure
hunt and meet the crew for the weekend, and have a good larf as well.
Cheers.

Hi Neil
I'm based in Bangor - I'm going down to the Treaure Hunt over the May weekend. If you want to run down in convoy, or fancy a run out one weekend, drop me a PM.
Good team here - not many Gogs though :beerjug:
ps I think I might know you through SARDA?

Welcome Neil & Nikki

Sounds like you live in a great location in the middle of Snowdonia.

Hope to see you at the treasure hunt.

Hi Neil and Nikki, and welcome to the madhouse. It really is a nice place. My wife is Elvie, and she may be along later to say hello. We both had 650 Gs's some years back, and they were great. Took us to Spain a couple of times, and all over this country. The 650 section hear has loads of good info, and often some pampered bikes come up for sale. Great fuel economy, and pop along all day at 85-90 on the motorways if that's what you want, however on A and B roads they are a real blast in the 50-70 mph range as they have so much torque. Elvie has just got one of the new 650 twin jobbies. Had it about 3 weeks, and only 1,000 miles so far, but she seems pleased. Hope we can meet up soon, and in the mean time keep on popping in.

Hi, yeah was a dog handler dog handler for a long time, as was nikki, reveal yourself, ovmro???

hi to the both of you :clap

the 650's are good bikes. Not much goes wrong with them. Steering head bearings can be a problem. Mine are ok @ 12k tho. High mileage bikes, hmm One lass in the usa put over 20k on hers in one year. I'm at 12k in two. Snoopy has an 04 with over 50k on it. High miles don't seem to be a problem for the engine or the rest of the bike.

As long as its been serviced correctly and regularly you should be fine. Later model bikes (05 and after i think :nenau) have twin spark engines which alleviate some problems a few of the single spark engines had.

that's all i can think of right now :D

owned and loved a 650 for 2 years

Hi there!
I'm happy to share my experiences of the 650 and what it will and won't do, just sold it sorry, for the 800 as I do so many motorway miles.
The main thing I was told and took advice on was that the front sprocket wears really quickly. So I was advised to change it with each 5000 mile service (about £14.99 for sprocket and labour), thus avoiding big chain wear and the need to change the rear sprocket too often (not at all in my case). Also upped the sprocket to 17 tooth to increase top cruising speed slightly.
The pretty tank protector stripe thingys come off easily so I araldited them on, I painted mine yellow on a black bike to brighten it up a bit.
although it will cruise at 85 it is rather uncomfortable in vibration and hurts your arm cos you have to keep the throttle twisted open. I got a crampbuster to rest my arm weight on the throttle and relieve that a bit.
I ended up doing long trips on smaller roads because it was much more fun and suited the bike better. It's a smashing little bike to ride. I've done loads of miles on it and love it!
Catherine.

That would be Deleted then?
