Hi,

I've been lurking recently, researching a replacement for my 2003 owned from new 54k mile Transalp. I commute into London from Kent all year round - have done for over 10 years. The Transalp has proved the most reliable/cheap to run bike that i have owned - started with a new 2000ish CBR600F, then a new 2000 Triumph Daytona, followed by a new 2003 SP1. Had that for 6 months and then it was stolen in Central London. By this time I had a family starting so made the decision to get something more sensible! Enter the Transalp!

I had a brief fling with an S4 Ducati Monster (as a backup summer bike), but two years was enough for both of us. Now I need a change from the TA. I came across the 800gs recently and it definitely seems to fit the bill. My only concern is that I look after my own bikes and the checking of valve clearances is a bit more involved than I would like.....but thats in another thread....

It looks like either a 800gs or 1200gs at some point in my future.

Cheers

Hello and welcome to the "special" place that is Tosser-Land..!!!! ;)

Go buy an F800...having ridden a Transalp over varying distances (including some of a fair old length) and different terrains, the F800 is waaaaaaaaaay better and prettier to boot :thumb2 :thumb2 It is taller than a 1200 but lighter and sooo much lighter than the Transalp

Welcome to the site and I agree with Madame B, the F800GS is great fun. They can mile munch for you wherever you take them. There are many long distance ride reports in motorcycle magazines too.

Welcome to the mad house.

There is plenty of info on here for you to make up your own mind. All the GSs commute well, but they do so much more.

Welcome and have fun.

Regards,

Path.

Thank you all. Lighter than the TA? Thats a surprise. I am leaning in the direction of the 800. Mostly from a maintenance and running costs point of view.

*edit* I just checked the weights TA 191kg 1200 203kg 800 178kg - the 1200 is only 12kg heavier!

Greetings & salutations, welcome to the site :D

I ride a GSA 1200....bloody love it :clap

Enjoy :thumb2

Thanks Keith. I've been reading some reviews of the 1200 and the conclusion seems to be that every tester would love one.

I can't really justify it for my commuting (down on fuel consumption for instance), but if a bargain comes along while I look for an 800 - well, you never know!
