New VVT boxer engine

Suzuki have an extremely simple reliable system on the new gsxr 1000.BMW will probably over complicate things and get failures 🤔

Whoo Hoo more complex shit to go wrong when yet again BMW use the public to properly road test their latest creations after it has gone on sale.

Well at least it means that dealers will have loads of low mieage triple black and Rallye bikes for sale when it does come out and no doubt some will already be down at the dealers attempting to place a deposit on the new R1250GS VVT triple black rallye

I thought the Triple Black version was due in 2024 (just before we all start riding the GS EV)?

DVT on the Multistrada made it much duller bike to ride. It has more power right through the range but it just didn't feel like because of the wide spread and lack of powerband.

I wonder if the VVT would apply to both intake and exhaust valves. The BMW E46 and E90 M3 engines suffered wear and seal breakdown on the VANOS systems. On the E46 the seals goes hard and leaks because the rubber compound is not compatible with the oil composition and the gear teeth breaks leading to proper engine failure. The E90 M3 V8 would have worn the plastic gears by 50k and due a replacement set but there is a good aftermarket kit available for both engines (you can search m3cutters for this info). Not playing devils advocate, it would be one hell of a packaging design and have they learned from previous budget design issues? Alpha Racing (the blokes that does the race S1000RR's for BMW) already has a kit in development to retrofit to the 1200 WC giving you about 140bhp. I also guess it would be time to go fully water cooled to comply with noise and emission regulations. Interesting times ahead in the Adventure (capital A) bike market with a price increase to match the lemmings desire to be a beta tester. Maybe BMW will get it right from the off this time, who knows. Hilltop would stay in business but as it is said there is no replacement for displacement. The future might well be orange.

the current GS has plenty of power for 95% of riders..i love the fact you can use all the power, taking it to the limiter when you want to do a bit of scratching ...140-160 BHP is not for an adventure bike with 19"-21" front wheels and skinny semi off road tyres

Being a 1290 KTM owner I obviously completely disagree with you!

Ducati use DVT since 2015, has its uses, but that seems to make it smoother at the bottom end, has a big kick at 6k though, hardley ever needed to touch 6k tbh

Strange when the r1100gs and r1150gs models came out everyone was happy with 80 or 85 bhp including everyone coming from Japanese Sports bikes and now 15 or so years down the line we are riding adventure bikes that produce more than the sports bikes of the late 90's could produce and yet want more !

More power, more weight, poorer build quality and of course more gizmos to go wrong it's called progress

Personally rather than more HP I'd prefer a lighter GS with a smaller 900cc VVT engine putting out about the same power as the current 1200.

You would lose the lovely low down grunt that the GS has. A VVT engine won't give more torque than a standard one only spread it around better. You could get more HP but only at higher rpm. The GS has plenty of go low down but runs out of puff a bit early, VVT would keep the lown grunt and allow the engine to carry on spinning up more to find some extra HP to match the opposition.
An important part of VVT introduction would be help with emissions, which is a struggle for the boxer engine, as it allows far more scope for the designers/engineers to optimise fuelling over a far wider rev range.

Having not ridden an 1150 for over 6 years (after owning one for over 9 years ) and having owned both the R1200 GSA TC and the R1200GSA LC for over 3 years each I had the opportunity to have a run on a 2003 r1150GS , okay it was well sorted with recent suspension but I thought it might in some way feel lacking.

It was like putting a pair of comfy old shoes back on and to be honest I believe that for 95% of the time I would not miss any of the extra bhp or any of the electronic toys or lower weight , perhaps it would have felt different had I been two up with luggage and pushing on down an Autobahn or on a high Alpine Pass.

But for in the UK with profusion of speed cameras I would be more than happy with 85 bhp

There is no such thing as too much HP.

Agreed there. Yes for 90%of the time even the 1100 aircooled motor is ok. But a vvt or an enlarged 1400 boxer or even a flat four... that would be sweet...

Lets hope that whatever they develop, they can make an engine that doesn't sound like the big ends have gone. The racket from these engines is abhorrent to anyone that has an ounce of mechanical sympathy.
