Missus would like to go to New Zealand next year for her 60th so being the dutiful husband that I am I said, yes dear, I'll start planning. Looking at 3 weeks ish but flexible. Provisionally looking at flying from Stansted, Emirates, to Auckland via Dubai,February, staying with her distant relatives for a few days then sight seeing both islands by hire car stopping at hotels/lodges en route. So question is, have you been, when would you recommend to go, what airline would you recommend and where are the 'must see' places.
Stansted,Gatwick or Heathrow are all options just that Stansted is closest.

So much to see. I shipped my bike there for six months and toured all over both Islands.

Places to see :-

West Coast of the South Island (vegetation is very similar to the Carretera Austral in Chile).

Invercargill (Motorcycle Mecca, E. Hayes shop for Bert Munro and the Truck Museum)

Milford Sound.

North Island - the town of Napier, the Coromandel Peninsula and the Bay of Plenty.

The list would be endless as it's such a wonderful place.

Plenty of motels and Chinese tourists in camper vans on the wrong side of the road :eek

Also an account by MikeO, of a trip there. It's in the trip report section.

Sent from me

The first thing that I'd say is that three weeks isn't that long, so plan carefully. Remember that NZ is very long and thin and there's an awful lot of nothing inbetween towns.
I would have a think about what it is that you really want to see and plan around that. Having lived on both the North and South Islands I would say that if you want the māori cultural experiences stay north, if you want the wild NZ then come south. I'm more than happy to offer my thoughts on any plans!

Thank you, trip may/can be extended. Will check with swmbo🙄

Three weeks in 2016 was not long enough One in the north and two in the south.

We went in 2018 for 5 weeks and only did the South Island.

A couple of things to bear in mind:

It takes a lot longer to get around than you might expect- think driving around rural Wales or the highlands of Scotland

There's quite a difference in temperature between the bottom of the South Island and the North Island so take this into consideration when deciding when to go.

Emirates are great and I'd go with them again, but they also use Quantas as a partner airline who were crap so pick your flights carefully. Have a geat time.

Looks like it's on, 4 weeks mid February to mid March. Couple of days staying with rellies using a day tripper pass to visit Auckland then hire car and motels/lodges etc to see the sights as dictated by swmbo.

Use Opodo or similar to find the cheapest flights and days / times to fly -

( and your talking booking months ahead ) i think i booked a trip to oz 10 months ahead ( optimum time specified by Opodo)

We went Thursday to Thursday on an afternoon flight

We got 3 business class seats for the price of one :)

And that was flying with Qatar airlines

Then ring - Dial a flight or similar to start playing the cost savings ;) ;)

We did it just before Covid in 2020 for 4 weeks . 2 weeks North Island 2 weeks South Island . We had a camper with `Britz picked up from Auckland dropped off in Christchurch . Loved it . Could have done 3 months . Coromandel in the North is a highlight , deserted beaches and just beautiful. We had a 6 birth camper for the 2 of us so the rear bed was left in use without having to pack it away . Kitchen shower etc meant we could stay in the camping areas where these things were mandatory . The country is set up for campers so they are never too big to get anywhere .would definitely go again , maybe hire a motorcycle . We did it for our joint 60th’s and it was a great way of marking that . Took a helicopter from Hass to the tip of the south , what a thing to do . Lots of black fly in the south . Do the wine area in Marlborough , Forrest wines was my favourite , they do Dr’s Sauvignon a 9% wine which is so nice , It’s in Renick . Have fun

I worked in NZ for a couple of years back in the late 80's. I would love to go back soon as I would imagine it has changed probably beyond recognition.....the urban areas anyway.

The people were great, the scenery stunning and the pace of life way more chilled than here. I loved Auckland and remember a phrase about it that someone told me at the time..."Auckland, the City of Sails. It looks like it was built yesterday and cleaned this morning!"

(Edit: must have been the mid 80's :blast as Rainbow Warrior had been re floated and was at Marsden Wharf in Auckland before it was towed out to sea and scuttled to act as part of the reef.)

The planning has begun. Spending a few days with Rellies in Auckland and a bit of sightseeing then as we like train journeys will possibly book the scenic rail from Auckland to Wellington, spend a couple of days sightseeing around Wellington then the ferry as foot passengers from Wellington to Picton, a day possibly in Picton then another scenic rail train from Picton to Christchurch, a couple of days in Christchurch then car or camper for more sightseeing then repeat train/ferry/train back to Auckland, couple of days R and R with Rellies again then car or camper for a bit more sightseeing of North island. Its a once only trip and only money after all, you cant take it with you

That sounds good - there's only two things I would suggest: The road from Picton to Christchurch is one of the best roads I've ever ridden, so it would be a shame to miss out on that as there's some amazing places to stop, especially Kaikoura.
The second thing is that I would try and spend more time travelling around the South Island and fly back to Auckland as you'd be going up the same rail tracks, just in the opposite direction.

I was there in 2016 both islands
had a camper for 3 weeks
but I found that all the camping sites I stayed at also had huts/pods and were just a cheap as overnight parking costs
im planning in going again in 2024/25
but would just rent a car this time and stay in pods/huts instead
it’s a lot cheaper

Calling Kitsilano to the NZ batphone……. He would be a good bet to offer advice
@Ron Gibson
It sounds as though you have done a lot of work on this already - and the MOST important thing that you have decided upon, is to take a couple of days upon arrival, to settle down/'de-compress' after the long flight/multiple time zone changes. Many have fallen asleep at the wheel of a camper van hired right off the flights. Very sad outcomes.

Your original question seemed to be about flights. If you are not a frequent long-haul traveller (7-10 hours plus), then this is probably the most important part of all of your planning - and a cheaper fare isn't going to help you when it involves 16 hours on a single flight (Qatar Doha-Auckland), or almost as long on Emirates (Dubai-Auckland).

My advice: see if you can get yourself on Singapore Airlines (www.singaporeair.com) with a 2-3 day stopover EACH WAY in Singapore. The Web site is very clear in laying out your flight options and corresponding pricing... These can vary even on the same day. The airline offers some great 'Singapore stopover rates' and if they don't suit you, have a look online to book direct at somewhere like Holiday Inn Express Katong (see: www.ihg.com and sign-up for membership rates). Feel free to PM and I can give you some more hotels to consider.

The principle advantage of Singapore Airlines is that their crews look after you. And this route breaks up your flights into easier-to-manage sections. Plus you can take an overnight flight from Heathrow (they have others).

Good alternatives for mostly the same reasons are Thai Airways via Bangkok, or Malaysian Airlines via Juala Lumpur (again, with stopovers).

Important: make sure that you get sleep on the plane on the London/Singapore sections... Don't spend all flight watching movies and arrive exhausted! Sleep is the single most important factor to manage jetlag. (Again happy to have a PM session for more insight into flights).

In N. Z., others have covered much of this and I agree about flying back from Christchurch... But you would do well to just fly into Wellington and then take a few days with a rental car to drive up the west side of the North Island, via New Plymouth, back to Auckland.

February is good timing: weather is generally very settled and warm (humid in Auckland), kids are back in school, days still reasonably long.

Just do remember in terms of personal safety and the security of your property:
N. Z. has jails, too, and they are also full. Petty crime that sustains an out of control drug scene is a real problem that ruins many holidays.
