'Im sure you have but have you checked the engine cut off switch on the handlebars is not in the off position?

When you turn the ignition on, can you hear the fuel pump prime (whirring)?

Nice one Bobble mate, I should have began there. :blast

No Bobble. I wondered about that. Havent owned it long so couldnt remember if I always heard that or not but definitely silence now.

If you don't hear the fuel pump prime then that's almost certainly where the problem lies.

I would be looking at the fuse that controls the fuel pump, then the connecter again to make sure (simple things first)

If the engine was running OK when you turned it off and if you now can't hear the fuel pump running and if your fuel gauge doesn't work, it points VERY STRONGLY to the earth connection on the wiring connector under the tank.

BUY SOME CONTACT CLEANER and clean the connections - do not prod around with tools and then damage the pins.

Make sure - 100% - that all the connections on that terminal block are good.

If you've been flashing wires, also check fuses under the seat.

Greg

Thanks for all your input. Checked fuses. T|he one for the fuel pump is fine, but the one next to it is blown, which is marked "mototronic" in the manual (whatever that means)
Could this be it?

Haha. It's like you are watching me.
Okay, Ill pop out tomorrow and try that in a more delicate manner.
Can you just get these fuses from halfords?
What would you use to apply the contact cleaner?
I take it WD40 is NOT a contact cleaner?

Yes.

The bike is not designed to work properly with blown fuses. Use the correct rating when you replace.

Greg

But now you said the other stuff, Im not sure whether I have blown it thugging my way around the connectors or whether that caused it in the first place.
Ill try it all tomorrow.
Are the fuses just standard i.e. will halfords stock them or are they BMW specific?

You will be able to get them from Halfords, and you will be able to pick up some Electrical Contact cleaner (purpose made) as Mr Masters said.

WD40 isn't a contact cleaner, its a penetrating light oil :thumb2

The connector block we are talking about is at the rear-right of the tank on the right hand side as you sit on the bike. My tank is different to yours, but the plug is in the same place.

Here is the plug you are looking for. (Pictured with the tank in situ)

Undo the tank securing bolt, gently lift the back of the tank up an inch or two and you will see the plug. Prop the tank up with a wee block of wood then squeeze the sides of the connector and slowly seperate it then use your contact cleaner and carefully clean the connections.

When done, reconnect the two blocks and before lowering and securing the tank again turn on the ignition and hopefully you will hear the fuel pump whine as ir primes the system with fuel.

WD40 is not a contact cleaner. You'll get some contact cleaner from Maplins or from eBay.

The fuses can be bought from Halfords, Maplins, eBay or your local motorists' shop. They are not BMW specific.

Brilliant stuff. I cant thank you enough for your efforts. Amazingly helpful. Ill post the results tomorrow

With regards to the pictures of the connector: Im fairly sure I found the right one which looks the same as that one, but I didn't have to unscrew the petrol tank, merely pull off a plastic strip immediately below the petrol tank on the right hands side to get access. I presume this is the same thing, just different becasue of the model difference?

That's the one. I have a 41 litre TT tank which sits a bit lower than the standard tank. :)

Just take your time and be careful and all will hopefully be grand. :thumb2

No clouds of chocking smoke from an electrical fire been reported yet?

It sounds as though you shorted the wrong wire on the ABS connector. The Motronic controls the fuel pump so a blown fuse would explain the lack of a whirring sound.

Sounds about right Rob.
Ive changed the fuse and now it acknowledges fuel and the fuel pump is working.
I have now flattend my battery so its charging as we speak.
Ill keep you posted

Just been out for a very satisfying ride on my perfectly working bike!

Just the fuse in the end.
Thanks very much for all your help and the friendly welcome
