Hi, some may recognise my avatar from another forum, though I have being lurking in the background here for a while. I have been looking to buy an 800GS for a bit now, having flirted with a KTM 950 SMR for a couple of years I now know where my interest lies.

So the drinks are on me to one and all, in part as a thank you for the good stuff I have gleaned from the forum so far. :beerjug:

The question is, Does anyone ever actually get a discount when buying a new BMW ?
It maybe in the very near future I/we are actually buying 2. We will be looking to trade in a pretty clean Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 at the same time, it's on an 09 plate with less than 3000miles on it.

Just interested in peoples experience in negotiating with BMW dealers.

Thanks in anticipation of your replies. :)

Bought a new 650 last year and got very good trade in :D plus extras :D , but not much movement on price :(

Best thing to do is go and have a chat.

Allan Jeffries seam to have a good reputation and their not to far from you :aidan

Earwig thanks for that, will be having a chat, just interested to see how others have done, as I don't want to try and keep talking the price down if it's not going to happen when they may offer other things less costly to them but worth money to me. Booked in for test rides on 8th March. :)
Cheers

Thanks for the welcome, from a fellow Bufonidae.
So far a cheap round. Thought my question might have sparked a bit more interest. But Hay Hoe.

Hi Mr Toad and welcome.
I did a deal last September at Astle in Laceby near Grimsby.

Managed to get a reasonable discount plus good discounts on extras.

Don't know if your buying on finance, but this is one area where BMW will talk, and will offer a lower rate than usual.
They offered me a much lower rate than their norm.but in the end I paid cash(had my retirement lump sum to go at)

Another thing to go for is to make sure the first service is in the deal.

All in all Astle (Tony) were good to deal with and i felt the result was a good deal.

Steve

In my experience there is little to be done on the cost of the main bike. I have however had lots of extras thrown in for nothing.

Ackro can FOC for example (£500) upgrade of the toolkit, first service included, delivery to me rather than a visit to the dealer. The delivery was important as to get a decent deal I bought from a dealer 150 miles away.

Mind you, I did buy my current GSA when I was pissed. And so was the dealer. :101

Guys many thanks for your comments etc. Much as I thought the price of a new bike seems to be pre-set. Must be a BMW thing, but everything else is up for negotiation. We have one bike to trade in and will be paying cash effectively as we have the money saved.
Thanks again. :)

This was about 6yrs ago but when I enquired about the cost of a 1150 GSA I was told there was no movement on the price.

In fact the exact words used were "These bikes sell themselves".

It was summed up in a conversation I had in 2005 in North Oxford BMW.

"We can sell every bike BMW can supply us this year at full price. Why would we discount?"

Welcomer Mr Toad from a fellow Doncaster Tosser :thumb

New BMW? Discount? You'll have to talk to the dealer(s) I'm afraid ... it's down to 'on the day', stock, what's in, part exchanges etc. There's not a lot of mark up on new BMW motorcycles for the dealers to 'play with' ... and it's a business after all!

F800GS .... go for it :thumb 65,000 + miles on mine now and enjoying every minute :thumb

Eggzakkerly.

You won't get much of a discount on the bike, but you will get a bloody good discount on kit, so with the bargaining power you have with your intended purchases, make the absolute most of that :thumb2

Don't forget to negotiate in a free 1st service (parts AND labour) or you could be looking ( at worst) at the thick end of a grand for that on two bikes.....the first service will cost (in real terms) about 50 quid in parts to the dealer, so leaving that until you're just about to sign the dotted line and you should get that in as well....

Also, don't be shy about being hard nosed about the deal....get a quote from one place, let them know you are going to call around and get a quote from other dealers for identical bikes/kit, then go back and forwards until you've squeezed every last drop from them.

Have a look through the dealers section and pick out the top few dealers.....Ocean (Plymouth) and Rainbow (some shitty flat capped town oop 'north :augie) regularly get praised here, and the cost of a train fare down or a lift from a fellow tosser might well make a longer journey well worth while (you won't be able to take advantage of the free servicing as easily though :blast)

Be as cheeky as you're able to be.....but still utterly polite.....luggage, clothing, helmets, anything you might need, add to your shopping list.

It's a game....you'll find so many threads saying that 'My dealer took the piss' on here, but those were/are still all started by people who either didn't realise there was a game on, or who lost in playing it :thumb

Good luck :beerjug:

EDIT.....look in to selling your Aprillia separately.....trade in prices can range from utterly shit to just rather crap.

Total cost to change is the only importang thing IMHO, so if you can't sell the Aprilia privately (always the best option) you should be able to get a decent p/x quote if buy new.

When I changed my bike last time there was approx £800 difference between private prices and average p/x quotes . BUT, after talking to several dealers I found one who increased the p/x offer by £500 so I managed to ease the pain.

Just shop around and see, most BMW dealers nowadays can give p/x quotes via email or phone, it may be worth travelling a bit more to save some money :thumb

That being said, now it's March 1st fool's time so if wait a few more months I am sure some interesting offers will come up, it happens pretty much every year...

Many thanks for your thought gent's, much appreciated. Rainbow is our local dealer and the Mrs bought her first proper bike from them in 2006 a GS650 single which she swapped for the Aprilia. They sold the GS650 for her and took a cut, which we were happy with. Some time life is just so busy, doing things the easy way is worth losing the extra bit of cash.
Need to give some thought to how we sell the Aprilia, it is in top nick and has little over 2000 miles in three years.
Thanks again.

Micky, Hello mate from Steve and Jane, trust all is well with you. :)

Another ploy is to wait until near the end of the quarter if you can, i.e., end of March, June, September or December. It may be that the dealer is needing registrations to make up a quarterly quota and qualify for a bonus from the manufacturer, and therefore may be more willing to do a deal.

Thanks for that mate, not thought about the quarterly issue, booked test rides on the 8th March, but no rush negotiating the deal :)

Going to be hard not to be too excited and eager, love the look of the 800 in the Trophy colours and the Mrs seems sold on the 650 Twin SE.
