Newbie re New R1200GS and Kit, advice please

Motorcycle clothing

There is no doubt that the BMW clothing is very good quality but, as with everything with the BMW label on it, remember that the label represents about 30% of the cost of the item. If you are about to buy a bike (in these VERY difficult times for dealers) remember that their mark up on extras, clothing, helmets etc; is much higher than on a bike - so it may be worth doing a deal at the time of purchase;
On the other hand 'my' dealer in Lyon has not managed to sell me any clothing etc; I bought a first class Tourag Suit ( very similar to the BMW product) less than half price direct from Hein Gericke in Germany as advertised in their sale a year or so ago. Of course threy may not want to deal via phone/internet in the UK where, I believe, they have their own shops now.

Thanks Wapping but it won't fit and I've just about decided to buy the twat suit!! :blast

No problem, we can't all be slimline.

The Twat suit is good up to a point. If you do a lot of miles they can become a pain if you are riding in 'mixed' weather.

What do I mean?

The waterproofing comes through the removable Gortex liner. This is great when you set off in nice warm weather, with the liner out, all fresh and cool.

Ride 250 miles down the road, the rain starts.... and it's heavy. You now have a problem. You have to take the suit off to get the lining in.... Getting refreshingly wet in the process...... Or slap it on over the top, to end up looking like a cross between the TinMan from the Wizard of Oz and a rejected extra from Red Adair's fire fighting team.

Look at the newer HG (or similar) suits with the new Gortex liner. They have found a method of bonding it to the other shell of the suit, making a waterproof but still comfortable and flexible suit. They are, in my opinion, way better.

I`m with Wapping here. The Rallye 2 is great in summer but a pain when it rains. The outer skin just soaks up the water and gets heavy.

I use HG gear which is better value and really good. You may want to look at Rukka or Halvarsons which are excellent!

Talking of clothing

The thread seems to have twisted slightly but why not? has anyone tried out one of these summer outfits for warm weather, I met a couple on a GS in Corsica last year. They looked very cool (in both senses) and were wearing gear mainly composed of netting and armour - and not much underneath; Yes, she looked particularly well clad.

Thanks for the offer of your GSA but I've nearly done a deal on a new one, mainly because of the finance but also I want a silver one with Premium & Dynamic Pack.
The Twat Suit which I tried on in Black seems to be great and fits me well so thrown in on top of the bike finance its a convenient solution.

So I'll have all the gear and no idea:blast

Took one out for a test ride today, great:thumb2

Good man. :thumb2

To avoid the, 'My lining is out and it's going to lash down' scenario and to help missing out doing the 'Standing around in your shreddies' dance as the heavens open, buy a cheap XXXL (or similar) sized over suit. Lob it over the top in a few seconds and stay dry.

You can often find oversized rainsuits in the odds and ends bin at shows or dealers, simply because there are not that many pie eaters, no matter what it sometimes seems like on UKGSer.

Touratech you say, uummm, just a got a 2009 1026 page book on accessories:D
Not that I've had a look yet, still getting my colour back after making the decission to spend so much money:nenau

"......Lob it over the top in a few seconds and stay dry....é Alright in theory but try it in a sudden storm & it is not so easy; i would suggest waterproof trousers and jacket are more sensible for the sudden emergency;

Just as good, for sure.:beerjug: The trick is to get one XXXXL. Whichever you choose, it beats taking clothes off to put a waterproof lining in.

Hot tip no. 3,317,011: Take a couple of supermarket plastic bags. Slip them over your boots, it will help your legs slide in.

Put them over your hands and your arms will slide in, too.

If it is Noah type rain. Bugger style and wear the same bags over your boots to keep feet dry.

I dived into a private garage in a small French village to perform the Twat suit lining rain dance. The wife of the house looked out of the kitchen window and saw a near naked man, in the falling rain. I simply waved back, as it is every Christian English gentleman's right to do. She rushed and locked her front door. Happy days.

Just remember that 1025 pages are pretty much unnecessary, the 1026th is the all important "returns information" page.

:D:D:D

For clothes with seperate goretex lining, there's a trick when it starts to rain : remove vest, put goretex liner on, put on vest. Everybody can do that, but now, the trousers ! Easy : take a raingear pant with you, and simply put it on OVER your pants. Leave goretexliner for pants at home. No need to get (near-) naked (but perhaps that would be a shame :D).

I have to admit, I bought some BMW gear when I entered the wonderful world of BMW. There's something about your first beemer. You kinda want the full experience. Since then I've found other brands equally good at lower prices.

I have been following this, and other, threads about jackets\suits -
I've looked at HG tuareg - not a bad bit of kit!

I also want to look at the Revit Cayenne Pro kit, but the only outlets I can find on t'internet are down south-

Anybody know a stockist up this end - Lancashire/Cumbria/Yorkshire

Phil

I live 12 miles from Williams manchester and wouldnt buy a soggy biscuit off them!!! The service department is ok ( Janet ) but the sales are shyte!

Try Wollastons in Northampton. they will sell you one over the phone and deliver it to your door.. ask for Steve and tell him Oly sent you!

Funny how this topic has focussed on which gear to wear or not and it's price, as opposed to a much more important issue, the price of the bike. Bling.

BMW dealers are discounting. But you have to push hard.

I got 9% off list on a new '09 GSA with some hard ball bargaining and playing one dealer off against another. Took delivery 1st March.

As i mentioned I bought mine from the internet; Once I had worked out the German for the various measurements it was just a question of filling in the form. If you do have to phone them you will be unlicky not to fi,nd someone who speaks English. The saving, including postage to france was ENORMOUS.

Phil, There's a place called visorsdown near Bolton that stocks Re'vit. I went the other week as I was looking at the Cayenne Pro stuff, but the cut and sizing is very naff for a nice jacket. If you've got long arms, forget it!!

http://www.visorsdown.co.uk

Swaying towards the Rukka Allroad myself...

Anyway, good luck Carl...

Carl just remember touratech AKA touratwat has had some serious delivery issues( do a search) and careful when buying as they rebrand quite a lot of items and add 20% on due to the touratech name and some of the so called "protectors" just clamp on using 1 or 2 P-Clips so its not going to protect feck all and is more for bling

Thanks chaps - I would consider buying online but there's nowt better than poking and prodding sommat, eh!
I'll probably visit the place in Horwich, and I've also found Millenium M\C's in Thatto Heath, St Helens who have Revit

Phil

Well Chaps, the deal is done:D
