newbie with questions

Hi have recently acquired an 02 r1150gsa, 18000 miles, fsh but been stood the last couple of years. Its my first beemer and tbh i wasnt expecting too but i really like it ! Have a couple of minor issues, on starting from cold theres a rattle which goes pretty quick i assume when the oil gets there ? The other noise is upon pulling away theres a few strange noises from under the tank which im assuming is the servo, is that normal ? Any thoughts regarding these would be appreciated regards paul

I'll start...no doubt there will be more to follow, firstly welcome lots of good stuff to,look at and learn on here. At the top of the thread stick with some regular questions etc

the knocking sounds seems to be fairly normal. There is a camchain tensioner mod that gets rid of that..... do a you tube search for 'chris harris' , to,get you started.

the screeching sound as you pull off is the servo ( ABS) engaging, should clear the two,red lights if not do a search for Gsa Servo, gsa abs lights.....

Well, if you've got an 02 1150GSA you've bagged what some (including me, but I would say that, as I ride one) think is the best of the breed. At 02 age it won't have servo, it's the simple non-servo ABS model. That's what causes the alarming sounding noise as you pull off. The good news is that the pre-servo brakes work just fine even if there is a problem with the ABS. It's also the single spark model, it's a pretty simple, dependable beast. Once it gets to Springtime and the roads dry out you'll find you can fling it around in a way you'd never expect. Handling's amazing for such a big beast.

LH Camchain Tensioner

The noise on start-up is probably the LH Tensioner. There is mod for this which is easy to do. Link to info below.

thanks guys will check out the tensioner upgrade and JonF the main thing im liking so far is the amount i can throw it around on the snotty roads we have atm

Has your bike had the tensioner mod done? Simple check. The spanner needed to fit the modified tensioner is smaller than the original. That's how you can tell at a glance. Now I'm not too sure on the spanner sizes, but I think the original is 15mm and the mod 13mm (Maybe 17mm and 15mm). Have a look at the tensioner on the right hand side. If the spanner sizes for the left and right are the same then your bike has not had the Modified tensioner fitted.

Mine makes a horrible thumping when cold but once warmed it quietens up. You'll soon learn from here that these bikes make some weird and wonderful noises and carry on like that.
I read on here that some bikes start making this noise at a certain mileages and keep doing it with no issues.
The cure is ear plugs and enjoy the ride.

Surely after two years idle and only 18k,this rattle will only improve with regular use.
