Hello there,
I've recently put down a deposit on a lovely 2009, 1200GS, 9,600 miles but have a slight reservation.
It rode beautifully and is just what I want, except that it makes a clunky metallic noise in traffic (not touching the clutch) coming back on the throttle after shutting off.
I could repeat it by shutting off then opening up again as many times as I wanted it to.
I mentioned this to the salesman and he rode it up and down the car park then let the service people try for a second opinion.
Their reply was that it was normal, so against my better judgement accepted that and left a deposit. Had a few sleepless nights since!.
I'm trying to get as much info as possible, and have been ringing round the dealers for advice, but am still not sure.
Should I lose my deposit and walk away, or live with it? Or do they all do it?
Many thanks,
John.

Surely if you are buying from a dealer you will have both a warranty(BMW) & sale of goods act to protect you if it goes bang.

What you describe could just be normal mechanical noise, I'm no mechanic probably more the opposite, or it could be excessive noise, try & test ride a similar aged vehicle from another dealer then you know. If noisey still might be best to get them to sort out before you buy, tell them you test roide another bike & no noise etc, they can either sort it out or give you your money back.

There is less buyers than you think so drive a hard bargain.

Good luck

I don't have a 1200:JB but my 1150 clunks just the same. It is the take-up of the 'slack' in the drivetrain and quite normal.

I am sure an expert will be along soon to completely contradict me.

Consider raising the issue of drive shaft wear..... Not sure if they can check for a pending problem.

Clunking is part of the "charm" of these tractors but i'm not sure i've ever heard of the noise you describe in the circumstances you describe, it seems as though you describe noise when the load kicks in when the throttle is applied.

You can't take the salesmans word or the mechanic. They are trying to sell you something. They are biased.

You need to either:

Get a shot of a similar bike so that you can compare.
Take someone along who has experience of these bikes so that they can compare.

If there is a problem, you won't lose your deposit.

I'd be suprised if there wasn't someone on here who would be willing to call into the shop and give your prospective bike the once over with you.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, the bike will have 12 months warranty, so I'd be covered if something let go.
I tried the twin cam (4700 miles) and that didn't do it, but of course may be due to age.
There is I think, a sprung loaded cam damper on the gearbox input shaft which it could be attributed to.
I'm going to try my mates's 2006- 1200GS on Thursday and see if that does it.
Thanks again.

Would it not be better for your mate to try the bike you have a deposit on ?

Surely it is better for the actual rider to ride another bike rather than somebody else with different "feeling" of a bike. It may be perfectly acceptable to the other chap and still be wrong!!

clunking

its just the drive taking up the slack mine does it and so does my mates . ya just gotta get used to the clonks and clunks these bikes make . as was said in another post if u get under a car and twist the prop theres a certain amount of backlash you just cant hear in when in the car . i had a siky smooth hayabusa and always had japs but soon got used to it . id say a lot of people worry over nothing . its fine mate they all do that sir :D:D

Thanks everybody.
I should know better anyway having owned so many Bee-ems in the past with gearboxes that sound like mangles.
I started off with a R69's which had a horrible gearchange, so I realise I've been worrying about bugger all!.
John.
