Next generation wish list

something that is back to basics.

- no fancy gimmicks (therefore they can't fail)
- no fancy electronics (so the bike will always work)
- a seat that is comfortable for 200 mile at a time
(so you can at least match the fuel tank)
- a screen that works.
- lights that are up to scratch
- some on bike storage
(Ulock, tool kit, compartment for change, sunnies etc)
- good panniers
same size for lhs and rhs, none of this crap exhaust cutout.
- stubby pipe as standard.
- decent engine / crash guards

Basically a lighter weight 1150GSA with the problems (seat, screen etc) fixed!

Proper low first gear for both offroad and threading through city traffic.

Better toolkit with tools for removing wheels included.

More underseat (or elsewhere) storage large enough for tools, inflator, first aid, fuse box, autocom and security lock.

Typical offroad bling fitted as standard, for example, large footprint to side stand and decent sized footpegs.

More advanced Canbus facilities so that headlights are turned off when engine no longer running (lost count of number of 1200GS that I've seen with flat batteries when offroading). Already exists on F650/800GS.

Smoooooother engine (more cylinders ?)
DSG gearbox
LCD instrument panel (with SatNav)
120 + bhp
Longer warranty
HID lights
3+ speed heated grips

- Reliability, i.e issues that leave you stranded like the FPC.
- Return of quality engineering, as opposed to things visibly built with cost as #1... BMW is healthily making tons of money on bikes nowadays, so they could dedicate capital to that... Specifically:

- better quality anodisation/SS bits, in particular their SS exhausts are appaling...
- Engineering seals, boxes, final drives etc with a maintenance schedule rather than promising "for life" and thet thing not being worht a year or two of use...
-Better switchgear. Even triumph has managed to make switches that won't conk out regulalry

Until there is tangible proof that these things are happening, the latest BM bike you are likely to see me on is an 05 GSA1150 or an 03 K1200RS/GT.... The newer stuff is unfortunately inferior in longevity terms throughout the board... As if BMW has engineered in a plan for everyone to keep flipping their bikes over every 2 years or so...

  • No canbus.
  • No Plastic trim panels (but OK for airfilter housing etc.).
  • Utterly bulletproof mechanicals.
  • Salt proof finish.
  • 300 miles tank range using entire tank content so that you don't drag around 4 litres that you can't use.
  • Seat all day comfortable.
  • Buffeting free screen.
  • Standard lights good enough for filthy, wet, midwinter night rides.
  • Quality suspension with 175-200mm travel including simple damping & pre-load adjustment.
  • Std heated grips and brush guards.
  • Under seat or under tail secure tool/puncture kit storage.
  • 100-120bhp with a fat flat torque curve from 1,500-6,000r pm
  • 180Kgs wet except for fuel.
  • Easy 60mpg without having to ride everywhere at 1/10th throttle.
  • Utterly planted feel of the 1150GS.
  • Exhaust low enough to use full size pannier and not of the roast nuts under seat variety.
  • Wide ratio g/box that has a first lwo enough for off road and an overdrive top.
  • Mudguards that actually channel the water away from the brake calipers, engine and rider but won't clog off road
  • Stainless fixings.
  • All gimmicks such as ABS, ESP, TPM etc.etc. optional extras.
P.S. It must be a boxer engine.

Well at least the triumph explorer has come up with cruise control, long over due on a adventure bike imo. Wonder if the water boxer will have it.

So those who want no canbus are prepared to go back to heavier, less reliable conventional wiring? :blast

And before you cite 'all the things that go wrong with it', think ;)

Canbus is one thing from the 12xx generation that I'd happily have on my lebbenfiddy (in conjunction with a fused aux wiring box in an easily accessible place:thumb)

There also seem to be a lot of people who have bought completely the wrong frikking bike if their wish lists are anything to go by

FARKLED UP standard GS

I'd like a standard GS with most of the styling from the adventure but without the bigger tank , extra weight etc.
So
Engine Bars
Auxilliary Fog lamps
Adventure Screen & winglets
Tank Graphics

Oh and an option for Fenda extenda and mudsling.
Wont know what to do with myself now :augie

cruse control

I had a 1200rt for 4 years with cruse control and electric screen ,tried cruse control once to see how it worked ,really cant see why anybody would use it after newness has worn off, ditto screen ,up and down like whores draws for three weeks ,then just left on low ,too much buffeting ,only time it does any good is ridding in heavy rain, set it to maxim where it does help. I now have 2010 adv much more fun and easier to ride .Back to original post adv needs a tool kit worthy of the name, some where to store it i.e more space under seat and the one thing that the r.t and adv have in common both need a comfy seat .It comes to something when after spending £15000 i had to buy sargent seats for adv and air hawk for rt if you want to ride more than 100 miles at a stretch.Have just been down to bike show on the adv and dident see any thing that I would do a swop for :beerjug:cheers

On my second GS (they are feking good bikes)

The bike itself does everything (even trackdays)

So its a jack of all trades and master of none ?.

Why not have kits & spec avalible from purchase for the owners preference
I.E and off road spec has a 21 inch front wheel etc
Touring spec has large panniers & gel seats etc
Street spec has 17 wheels etc

This would cope with the various supermoto touring bikes

Mines never going to go off road, but if some one can recomend me a bike which will go to and from work, out on ride outs, cope with the english b roads :blast, be ridden all year round, be fun to ride, not have a stupid chain, not have forks which are a bad design from the start, i would by one tomorow

If any says the Honda Deulville i stab em (i looked at one once and lost the will to live)

And the seat is fine, trust me try a suzuki

Sorted :D

Jim:thumb

Definitley the seat.
Cruise would be nice.
Definitely a better headlamp.

And that's about it :)
