A friend of mine with an ST1300 made himself a great looking seat from a faux sheepskin rug he bought for a tenner, it feels really nice on the rear but surely such a solution would become a sodden mess in the rain?

I have a camping pillow and a bit of vet bedding - with elastic straps under seat - cost ~ £10

I went down the sheepskin route ...
Maybe a slight improvement in comfort but it seriously stop any real movement in the saddle ... so if you like to learn a bit during spirited riding , it will annoy the hell out of you.
But it good that I only had to spend 10 quid to find this out!

I suffer badly from bike bum. I have tried and am still trying to get a comfortable seat. So far I have purchased and tried a Sargent seat, airhawk, sheepskin and raising the front of the standard seat.
The results so far are:
Standard seat in the high position on the front and low on the back is best for me. The airhawk helps but not perfect so still testing the amount of air. Sargent seat hurts under my thighs but get less bike bum than the standard seat in normal position ( low front and back). Sheepskin also helps and an testing now.

Same problem. Stock seat sore after 80 -120 miles or so. Sargent seat, not sore at all. It's wider, firmer and looks good. Use on low-low setting so slip forward a bit more and the standard seat seems slightly taller than the standard Sargent but overall pretty good, but pricey.

this might be a stupid question, but aren't sheepskins prone to being hot and soggy depending on conditions??

really? It wasnt meant to be a funny in anyway, I'm off to Portugal next month and we've got 1500 miles to cover in 3 or 4 days, so a comty seat has been something i've been considering.
Marino wool sheds water when rained on.
If find in comfy without being sweaty when weather hot...and not sticky like vinyle.

You did both parts of our new GSA 2 weeks ago while we waited and lowered it massively and levelled it off.
I can now ride the bloody thing. I may need to fine tune it a bit but I am very grateful, it has transformed the bike from an unwealdy beast to great tourer for our RTW trip.

This is another one of those one man's meat is another man's poison topics.
Like a lot of other people I've found the GS seat horribly uncomfortable for any distance. I tried the front high, back low trick and it makes a difference for me, but not enough.
I tried the Airhawk and didn't get on with it, no matter what I did with it.
I tried a sheepskin and while it made a difference it wasn't enough for those big miles days.
Then just as I was contemplating giving the plastic a severe bashing and getting a Sargent a fellow Tosser flogged me a seat from Custom Seats in Coventry. I've had one of these before on an FJR that I used to have and it was much better than the standard seat.
Report so far. Done lots of shorter rides, i.e. 100 - 150 miles no problem and one 300 mile ride. I wasn't fresh as a daisy at the end of 300 miles but I could have done more without any problems. So Custom Seats http://www.motorbike-seats.co.uk/ get my vote. Not cheap but well made, fairly quick turnaround, and don't forget to get a Gelastic insert. Much better than some of the pathetic Gel pads I've seen, and much more effective. There's a gallery on the web site of GS's that he's done previously but he'll do pretty much whatever you want in terms of shape or height as long as it's possible. Same with colours.
As usual, no connection, just a satisfied customer.

andrew, I have some sheepskins at home and could bodge up er.... I mean make you a cover at some point if you fancy it, well i am an upholstery guy
Adria's been nagging me to do one for her for ages, give her a ring and we'll see if we can sort it out sometime.
