Nikwax?

I'm washing a jacket in Nikwax Tech Wash then I'm going wash it again in Nikwax TX.Direct waterproofing.

It's a Gortex jacket.

Has anyone done this and did it improve the waterproofing or have I wasted my money on "snake oil" ?

I have and it is Brilliant!

If you are not sure you are doing the right thing ... call Nikwax. I spoke to a nice lady there who gave me detailed instructions and tips.

I first used the spray on TX Direct waterproofing and it is difficult to get right ... and I didn't ... so my aerostitch outer pockets leaked! After doing it properly they waterproofed the outer pockets which don't have the goretex lining.

Method suggested ...
1. Was with regular washing poweder ... I can't remember whether it is Bio or No-bio you shouldn't use on Goretex ... This is to get out the tougher stains.
2. Then wash again with the tech wash
3. Then wash with the waterproofing stuff

Hang to dry and BINGO ... one revitalised goretex garment.

the only problem I had with washing my aerostitch was that the velco went all "fluffy".

Try sticking both aprts together before the wash - this should help and will prevent the velcro sticking to other parts of the jacket that it shouldn't during the wash.

If you already do this you can feel free to ignore me!

I wished I had thought of that before ..

Have done that subsequently but initial damage already done ...

Nikwax is odd stuff. I've used it on my jacket (following the same process that Novice posted) and it's worked a treat on my jacket, but my leggins are now leaking and I can't work out why.

Yeah, I've used both Nikwax treatments and found they worked a treat, kit was really grubby after a dusty fortnight in the Picos last summer, came up like new. Make sure there is absolutely no trace of regular detergent in the washing machine before you start, otherwise the treatment gets f*cked up

i did use nikwax once & it did FA.

In addition, I've always been advised to tumble-dry the jacket after treating as this rejuvinates the Gortex membrane. Disclaimer time: But Check Your Labels First!

It has nothing to do with the Gore-Tex membrane and everything to do with waterproofing the outer face fabric. If this becomes waterlogged it prevents perspiration molecules from transpiring through the Gore-Tex and you get wet inside the garment

Again, this has nothing to do with the Gore-Tex membrane and everything to do with the face fabric. Tumble drying or ironing...yes, really....the face fabric of the garment resets the hydrophobic coating and restores its water-repellant qualities.

My wife washes everthing in it, IE outdoor gear be it hill walking equipment or biking gear, you can even make a non waterproof garment waterproof doing exactly what you described..........Good Stuff.

Just found a handkerchief in one of the jacket pockets, will that be waterproof now and useless at mopping up snot?

Yep as Legger says great stuff. I use it on all my Paramo outdoor gear (much better that Gortex IMHO).
Use it on Gortex to stop the outer from 'wetting out' which affects both the abilty of Gortex to breath and prevents heat 'wicking' away from your body.

If you are the type that damps down you can do your boxers in the stuff, then just empty them in the morning.

Excellent stuff, i wash my Goretex HG gear & my Paramo walking kit in Nikwax Tech wash ( recommended for Gore-tex). Once washed i lay the gear out on a towel and spray with TX-Direct i think. Leave for a while and mop up any excess. I then tumle dry on a low setting for a short while. This then seals the stuff to the fibres. After that just hang it up to dry as normal. I have done this every 6 months or so and it keeps the kit waterproof and in A1 condition.
