As this is my first post it will be rather long. I spent 6 years and 40000 miles with a ZZR1100 doing all my own servicing and travelling abroad each year without any breakdowns until 2004 when the wife and I fell off in southern Spain trying to get up a steep dirt track, time for a change I thought.
Bought the GS12 (yellow) in October 2004. On leaving for our hols in June the bike stopped after 6 miles, it then carried on for another 1500 miles stopping on the run twice, finally refusing to start in southern Spain. BMW assistance to Malaga, five days and 20 hours of my time later it was ready with 10 minutes to spare before the dealer shut for the weekend, fuel pump "o" ring (as you will have read on this forum). The dealer stated that we can not expect the same after sales service in Spain due to the bikes and cars costing less in Spain?. Also get the hire car from the dealer, as they will not return your bike to where you are staying (in my case 35 miles away)
On return, so far, a new rear shock absorber was replaced due to the rebound adjuster turning as many times as you like but doing nothing, I think that riding during the winter and not having a garage, salt water had got past the adjuster and crroded inside.
Another breakdown in August, stopped while running, this time due to a failed ignition controller. Also the front engine cover is now needing replaced due to corrosion, and the fork bridge bolts needed between 90-180 degrees to tighten to torque spec.
If it was not for the fact that is such a graet bike, it would have been changed by now..
I thought it was about time to tell of my experience with the GS after reading many other tales.
