I'm seriously thinking about converting the dipped beam on my 1150 to HID. NN has two versions (one with a remote igniter?) that seem good value and less hassle than driving lights, spot lights etc etc.

Anyone have any experience with them? Are they worth it? Are they too bright to use on dipped? are they easy to fit?

Must keep this quiet as SWMBO may not be too pleased after the suspension upgrade and new GPS already this year;)

Thanks in advance.

I've got one fitted to my dip beam and it's brilliant (pardon the pun there :) ). Straightforward to fit and makes a huge difference to my riding at night. I also like the 'invisible' nature of this upgrade rather than having the extra lights fitted, though each to their own as I know they're popular.

I have one of his kits, been on the bike for well over two years now, best upgrade I've made.

Mine is fitted to the dipped beam unit and is amazing...almost negates the need to for Main Beam..

Easy-ish to fit (couple of hours), well worth it...:thumb

Coolcarbon is being modest about things:
Firstly the transformation is brilliant literally.
Secondly he did a photo journal on how to to do it

I could not have done it without following the pictures as the instructions that the kit comes with are not wholly clear - although they are a useful cross reference.
In the bargain forum and ebay section there were refernces to cheaper kits which people appear to have used with some success.
Good luck :thumb2

I also have a NN kit on my R1150GS (dipped beam) for almost 2 years now. Best modification I've ever done. Should have done it sooner.

The report on bmwridersscotland was very usefull for installation. Thanks for that one. :thumb

Crazily expensive. I HID'd my dipped beam for £40. I can do the main for the same amount but haven't bothered. Standard H1 HID kit from ebay £80 gets you dipped and main. Really easy to fit, no wire chopping, happy days.

So what's the difference between NNs and Ebay? Size of the ballast?

It's funny how the ballasts on mine and Flipfly's kits are the same as the German ones you find in OEM's headlamps ;)

Drat, OK you've pursuaded me. Being a technical numpty, what am I looking for if I buy from Ebay?

Allyou need is a H1 HID xenon conversion. Choose 4600k 0r 6000k. Many choose 6000k for the blue coolness of the light. Dan and I went for 4600k which gives a white light but slightly more lumens. Either way it's up to you. Most popular is 6000k but if I replaced mine I'd still choose 4700k.
They are a relly easy thing to fit.
Pay a little more (£100-120) nand you'll get a much quicker delivery. The kit will come as a twin pack. This will do Hi and lo beam. If you just want one, sell the other in the F/S section, you'll get £60 for it. That way the kit has cost you £60 at worst.

Ive got a set due this week but not sure whether to fit both hi & low beam or just low. If i go for the latter i will have a set up for grabs :thumb

Why dip only?

G'day guy's, thinking of going the HID route as discribed in this thread, why BMW brought out a bike with worse lights than it's predecessor they only know, one query why are some of you only doing the dip? Am I missing some thing? regards to all Dusan :thumb

I went with dip beam after reading of the warm up delay on main and that when fully on it ends up as a distant bright spot.

I have a couple of 50 watt HID H1 kits to go at them moment (all the Ebay kits and NN kits are 35 watt kits).

Will offload them for £135 a pair ... delivered in 2 days. PM me if interested.

They are 5000K kits ... which I feel is the best compromise for colour.

The 50watt kits are markedly brighter than the 35s ... as per this comment from a guy who just replaced his 35 watt main beam with a 50 watt

colebatch, do you know if on a non ABS bike if the ballast would fit where the ABS should sit under the tank?

ballast fitting

Enough room in there for several ballasts and your sandwiches.
