Nippy's new oil can

Just wondering if anybody has bought one off nippy normans new oil cans that stash somewhere beneath the tank...what should fit in the space that this oil can is going in ? i like the idea off mounting my spare oil on the bike and not in my luggage.

yes..no...maybe...dunno

no she uses very little day by day but got a2500/ 3000 mile jaunt around spain planned and the oil she uses isn't readily available at your average garage so i want to carry my own supply...not sure how much oil she will use in a spanish/portugese heat wave(july/august)

The area under the right tank is where the USA model GSA's have a cannister fitted that relates to the stringent emission regs, contains charcoal or something to filter fumes.

The nippy norman thing stores 0.7 litres, be carefull though. Dont overfill the bottle, leave an expansion gap, slso squeeze the bottle a little bit before sealing or the bottle will swell in the heat and when you go up and down the mountains.....If it's too full it will leak and make a right mess...

What 'oil that she uses' is not readily available at your average garage on this epic ride of 2,500 miles in the burning heat of Spain or Portugal?

They sell suitable oily gloop in Morocco, which is beyond Spain. Has the global recession got that bad?

To answer your question, though. No, I have no experience of Nippy's new oil can. Do report back, please.

TBH if you're just topping up 3,000 miles worth you can (within reason) bung any old oil in so personally I wouldn't worry about carrying oil.

Just come back from Maroc, 6,500 miles and didn't need to top up the oil once (to be fair though, the engine's now got enough miles on it that it uses very little, if any, oil).

....same ride, mine used non.....

There are lots of BMWs in Spain and Portugal, and they all need oil. If you need some, you will find some. Don't bother carrying oil...space/weight/clutter....take your pick.

just going by the makers recomendation's

actevo 20w 50 mineral oil , designed specifically for big air cooled twin's , never seen it in a roadside garage/fuel station , here or abroad , i know you can use any oil for a top up but as i plan to keep my gs a long time i'm running it in as carefully as possible , so if it's possible to carry the specified oil without any loss of space in my luggage then why not , motor is still very tight(5,500 miles) it,s used just over a litre in that time , i'm told i can go semi synthetic after 15,000 , then i'll be able to pick it up anywhere!

Mine is at 52k and runs like a sewing machine. It's never used a drop in all that time but I have tried all sorts of oil in there from halfords classic car to top spec synthetic. None makes any difference to the performance as in the words of my local dealer "it's a tractor engine" I now run with 20/50 semi synthetic which is good enough.

As the oil change is only 6k, a mix of something else in an emergency is not going to affect your engine so I wouldn't worry to be honest.

Are you sure they all do or is that just heresay I've had 4 GS's of various types and NONE have used excessive oil. The only time any of mine have used a bit is in very, very hot weather over a long period i.e +100f which is hardly unexpected.

I think a lot of the alleged oil usage comes from overfilling TBH.

At £12 it is a good deal! My bike doesn't seem to use any oil between services but Nippy's bottle stashes away so neatly I know it is there 'just in case'!
Good advice about not filling it too full etc.

Well I never new there was a space there under the tank, fantastic!! no really just looked and its great for storing all kinds of things. I have ordered to oil bottle which comes with rubber strap and screws, the threads are already there, if you don't want to store oil, it looks good for a tool roll or punture repair kit or inner tube. brilliant.
