Hi folks looking at an 04 GS1200 on fleabay. It stays the abs fault light is on and that the rear abs is no longer working.

Is it a big job to fix? What has most likely gone wrong?

Can the bike still be ridden without it? (Never had ABS before)

Bike can be ridden but the bill for new ABS pump can be silly money. Check the speedo pickup in final drive gearbox.
If you've not bought the bike knock price down by £=lots to cover the expense and hassle.

Servo ABS can also be completely removed from the early bikes.

PS a recent ABS post did mention a guy who can rebuild/ replace ABS pump motors. You'll have to do a forum search. Google can be more effective. Prefix search string with "UKGSer"

I have a 2004 with an ABS issue. Riding it with the warning flashing is OK but you do run the risk of having the pump fail and you only having residual pressure to stop.

I have ridden home once or twice like this but I realised when it was happening and normally cycling the ignition gets it working again.

Personally I would not try it on a bike I did not know.

As for a fix, you can remove it completely and put up with the dashdoard warning lights (dealt with some tape) or take it to Motoscot for a fix (£500+) or BMW (£1500+).

Cheers guys, I'll see where the auction ends up at, but like you say the price will have to reflect the fault
