Hey folks having a problem with my rear brake light. Brake light on but no brake light. At the light fitting there are three connectors. The centre one is the Earth and I've continuity there , I've 12volts on the tail light on the right but 2 volts or so on the brake light pin on the left. So I'm thinking the problem is either a broken wire or either of the brake light switches. Would either of the switches gone knock out the brake light totally. Any advice or help greatly appreciated. I'm under time pressure as hoping to use the bike on a weekend trip
Thanks folks

bike year and model would help Olly??

I am thinking its a non servo bike ??

and of course you checked the bulb ?

So the brake light doesn’t work on both front or rear brake ?
If that’s correct then use your grey matter to work it out… .. :D

Is the front brake light working? :nenau :D

Sorry lads 2003 1150 gs adv
Steptoe I've used all the grey matter I have all of 5 minutes worth😀. That's why I'm on here. Neither front or back are working on brake light. I have a tail light. Am I right in thnking if the switch is gone in one it doesn't effect the other.

Tail light working and no brake light sounds like a bulb issue to me.

I’m presuming you’ve tried a new bulb?
They can look ok but be blown.

Do I remember correctly that if the tail light filament blows that the bike detects that and uses the brake light filament as the tail light.
Safety, to prevent the riding at night without a rear light scenario.

Or did I make that up. I had an R1150GS Adv from ‘03 to ‘09…I’m sure that I experienced that at one point.

The tab for the centre ‘pin’ of the bulb bend inwards? Happened on my 2001 1150GS. Bend it back and no further issues since (20 years). Think it’s still on the same bulb.

I had an issue similar and started tracing as you have and it was simply a dirty/ corroded terminal... The rear GS holders feel a bit cheap and the bulb is a bit slack in there... After that you should go hunting wire damage but I've never really found loom issues apart from the usual ignition loom breakage that's common...

Cheers folks for all the advice have left it till next week to sort. Gonna take the 1200gs to Donegal for the weekend camping. Myself and Hatcho + 2 more reprobates heading off. Weather is supposed to be nice so happy days 😀
Enjoy your weekend chaps
